How Do Scouts Impact My Life
Scouting has had a tremendous effect on my life since I first started as a Cub Scout. Principles of honor, respect, and responsibility were introduced to me and then developed further through Boy Scouts. These themes have benefited me up to now and will continue to assist me in the future. The next five years of my life will include high school and the start of college. Throughout scouting, I have learned that it is up to me to do the merit badges and complete my part through self-discipline. Self-discipline will keep me focused and attentive with my schoolwork in high school and in college. I am able to distinguish the time for completing my class work and time to be with my friends. I also have been able to develop my ability in communicating

Last summer, I endeavored a life changing experience. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is a leadership program. It is the best Boys State program in the nation. On top of this, it is among the top programs for leadership, growth, and is a meeting of the greatest minds of Ohio, and by proxy, of the nation. But it’s so much more than that. From Day One, the minute you step off the bus, it instantly becomes an incredible experience. Everyone, people who have never even met before, are shaking everyone else’s hands, introducing themselves, and campaigning for positions before anyone has even dropped their luggage off. It was breathtaking, truly, and it made me realize that I too had to step up. Naturally, I did just that. I started meeting people,…

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program can be a journey of life changing experiences that can and will build character and leadership. I am currently a freshman and I am enrolled in the JROTC program at Boca Ciega High School, and at first I wasn’t sure what to expect and who I would encounter. Throughout my year so far being a cadet, I am being challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. But I was able to learn more about teamwork and leadership through this short span. The curriculum consists of practical exercises that directly target an individual’s leadership and character. JROTC has taught me what I would not have learned in any other class in high school. Older cadets have overcome fears and have formed lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. And I do intend on being like my role models in this program. Overall, they have found that JROTC has molded a sense of character within them just it has for me.…

When I was five months away from turning 18, I thought I was faced with an impassible wall called Eagle Scout. There are 6 ranks in Boy Scouts. There is Tenderfoot, Second class, First class, Star rank, Life rank, and Eagle scout. As you can imagine the difficulty of obtaining the next rank gets progressively harder. Getting Life rank is pretty hard already, then when I am five months away from turning 18 I kind of froze up, I had a lot of work to do and I pretty much gave up because I didn’t think I could do it.…

When growing up, the idea of enrolling in summer camp was quite daunting, and I hated it because I was not comfortable with meeting new people; I was very shy. However, I had to face these fears when I attended Roughing It Day Camp because my school counselor suggested that I do so. I started as an eighth grader in the Junior High Girls Group. On my first day of summer camp, I was welcomed into a group of girls who were excited to be at camp. Their optimism soon rubbed off on me when I started going to fun activities where we all bonded as a group. During the summers of 2013 and 2014, I participated in the Campers in Leadership Training (CILT) program, where campers entering the ninth and tenth grade would learn leadership skills by working…

Ask any Eagle Scout and they will tell you that there was a point in their time of being a Cub/ Boy scout where they wanted to quit. A time when they wanted to just give up and not be pushed to their limits. Everyone had different reasons for wanting to quit but the thing that separated the Boy Scouts from the Eagle Scouts was that the Eagle Scouts did not quit. It took a lot of perseverance to stick with Scouting for 11 years out of my 18 year life. All the long physically straining hikes and the late nights of extensive planning it took to get my Eagle Scout project approved sometimes made me question scouting but i stuck with it and i’m better for it.…

Focusing on my effort to become an Eagle Scout, I faced many obstacles but worked very hard and was determined to become an Eagle Scout. On my path to becoming an Eagle Scout, there were many people who doubted my ability and leadership skills. However, I persevered and focused on my goal. From the time I joined the Boy Scouts at age thirteen, I had been hearing about the Boy Scouts and the highest rank that could be achieved. Hearing stories about previous Eagle Scouts that had come through my troop and how highly they were spoken of, gave me the motivation to set a goal to reach that position. There were not many previous Eagle Scouts, and becoming one would set me apart from the rest of the scouts. I remember as a Boy Scout, making a pinky promise with my mother to follow…

I do not think I will ever be able to recreate the experience of sitting on top of Mount Baldy, at 12,441 feet, next to a warm fire, the world completely silent except for the crackling of sparks and the wind with a soft howl as it passes through mountains, or hiking through a luscious green meadow with grass all the way up to your shoulders, with the feeling that you have been engulfed by the world. Deciding to join the Boy Scouts has probably been one of the best decisions of my life. Besides teaching me new skills, it has also given me new experiences like going to summer camps in the mountains, scuba diving in the gulf of Mexico, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, and much more. In the Boy Scouts there is an experience like no other, it is the Mecca of Boy Scouts, Philmont Scout Ranch. Located in Cimarron, New Mexico, it is the largest high adventure base, spanning a little over 137,000 acres. At Philmont, you bring a backpack and fit as much as you can…
