How Did The South Cause The Civil War Dbq
People do not actually know the exact things that started the Civil War but that is why I am here. Back then the South was pro slavery and the North was not. That was like the main reason it was a war plus other things that was happening involving the government. The South seceded from The Union because they wanted slavery but the North did not, they did not want to follow the national government's rules, and they did not have as much as the North.

The South's economy was based off of slavery unlike the North. The South's economy was based off of slavery unlike the North. Compromises was made to keep the amount of slave states and free states equal, but many of them have been overridden to keep slavery going in new territories (Doc 1). This could start a war because the North did not want slavery so if the South is breaking rules to keep slavery it is not going to be okay. The South did many things to make slavery happen in the new territory because they depended on it and that could start something and make them want to secede. …show more content…
Just like I said before the South broke compromises to keep slavery going (Doc 1). The South felt like they had rights and powers the government could not deny (Doc 5). The South felt overpowered by the government and that is why they overridden compromises and led to states seceding from the Union.     They depended greatly on the North for their industries and factories, because they had very few. They also opposed federal spending on internal improvements and they wanted no tariffs. Even despite having a somewhat weak economy, the South wanted to gain their independence to become their own country, and to have their own way of life, which included slavery as legal.     The Old South had had troubles with the United States since the beginning of the 19th century. Unfortunately everything culminated in the elections of 1860, where president Lincoln was elected, representing the Republican Party, and South Carolina started something that would lead to a disastrous finale, secession. Since the Republican Party was sectional (from the North), the South was confident that Lincoln would never have their best interests at heart.     Firstly, The war was based on age-old prejudice and extremism. The South used to think of the North as money-grabbing "yellow bellies" while the Northerners thought of the south as hillbillies and oppressors of the weak and disadvantaged, namely the blacks. The South did a lot of things that severely angered the North. One such thing was the Fugitive Slave Act. This Act made it possible for representatives of slave owners to capture back slave and prosecute anyone that had helped the slaves. Many Northerners were abolitionists and this made them angry as they themselves had helped many slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. Another issue that angered the North was the Brooks vs. Sumner clash. This event could have largely been avoided if Brooks had kept a cooler head.     Ever since the waning battles, and the slow, contentious process of reconstructing the Union and the readmission of the Confederate States, the American Civil War has filled more pages of scholarly discourse than any other event in U.S. history (1). Amongst the endless topics to which these volumes are devoted, no topic is more debated, chronicled and studied than the various causes that lead to the bloodiest conflict in American history, and its effects on this country’s future. As the 19th century rapidly progressed toward internal conflict in the recently-formed United States of America, it’s physical, economic, and military growth created continuous need for its leaders to build its structure through the tools provided by the Constitution. “Manifest Destiny”, as John O’Sullivan described it, was realized as America’s borders stretched to the Pacific. Population rose exponentially and continued West forcing leadership and legislation to work to maintain democracy, quickly putting a spotlight on the cleavages that had been slowly dividing the nation’s allegiances into Northern or Southern. Many of these cleavages, such as different economic, social and political ideologies, were indirectly born from factors inherent to two distinct regions of the nation. Others, such as the Southern defense and reliance on slavery, and its radical, separatist threats of secession, that directly caused passionate divisions and often-violent results. To prevent too much conflict, they implemented numerous compromises such as the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850.
