Bruni writes about the edge of destruction of Florence by Milanese “The Milanese army defeats Florence and her allies and captures their commander.” With the army of Florence destroyed and commander of their army in enemies hands Florentines were “terribly frightened and anxious, expecting the enemy from hour to hour.” This was a dark time for Florence they were on the brink of destruction or so they thought since thought since the enemies were stopped. To think that this destruction could have been helped if the treaty of peace was kept between the Milanese and Florentines but as the Milanese said “In time of peace, while no one expected them to do anything, Florentines went to Germany” to get the Germans to fight the general of the Milan. If this accusation or action was not performed Florence would not have been close to destruction. Petrarch starts his writings with “If, however, you should have heard of me, you may desire to know what manner of man I was.” This way of righting is shocking since peoples thinking is you want to get to heaven but the best way is to live for others and help others. Petrarch is talking not for others but about himself this is why he is different the other humanist. His righting talking about how he feels and how he sees things. He talks about how he “was, in truth, a poor mortal like yourself, neither very exalted in my origin.” Petrarch lets his readers know that he was never really rich and is just like the poor people yet he later discusses that “The greatest kings of this age have loved and courted me.” To explain why Petrarch was different and how he developed education and the arts, there needed to be proof and knowledge of how Petrarch was and wrote. He wrote about himself and with soothing words that all countered each other. For instance, the being poor yet also being able to be courted by the kings.
