In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf’s first intention when traveling to the Daneland was to keep his father’s friendship with Hrothgar intact. Although Beowulf had a sounds cause for traveling to the Daneland, the fame and glory Beowulf later received became his main focus and motivated him to continue entering life threatening battles. This piece of literature showcases the accomplishments and celebrations of a young Geat named Beowulf. Throughout the entire epic, Beowulf has many achievements which influence his god-like appearance within the Anglo-Saxon society. The average reader may be so mesmerized with his talents, they might overlook the fact that Beowulf continues to enter battles in order to boost his self…

Rather than send warriors to fight the dragon, Beowulf goes himself to fight the dragon. Taking sword and shield he engages the beast in combat. However, Beowulf runs into complications with this beast, “the iron Shield, and for a time it held, protected Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt.” (720-722) Beowulf finds himself in defeat for the first time. Then Wiglaf, one of his kinsmen, comes to his aid and together they defeat the dragon. Yet, Beowulf is mortally wounded and is about to die. Before dying, he passes the throne to Wiglaf. Thus the hero dies in a heroic manner and with pride, after fighting a foe that once again threatened a people. Beowulf is not only a hero, but also an example to all warriors of what they should strive to…

To understand the famous Anglo- Saxon hero Beowulf, one must understand the culture that created Beowulf. The Anglo- Saxons were influential, strong, and loyal people. Research has found that, “the Anglo- Saxons arrived in Britain in about 449 A.D.”(BBC). This shows that Anglo- Saxon culture has had an influence on American history for a long duration of time because they are still discussed today. And were probably some of the first heroes that ever lived. This culture showed a great deal of braveness throughout their time. The men were put in many different situations, but their daring drive, and courageousness allowed them to persevere. According to the Germanic (Anglo Saxon) Warrior, “A glorious and courageous death was the only fitting end to a glorious life” (Hammack). This statement shows that the men took pride in fighting to protect their citizens, no matter what adversities came their way. It also shows that they had no fear and dying to save someone else, which was a very brave thing to do. Another characteristic displayed in Anglo- Saxon culture was loyalty. The warriors would never leave any of their comrades behind in battle. Hammack described this idea in this way:…

In this scenario we see the Geats getting into more trouble and getting into a battle. Beowulf who has already proven himself to be very powerful and honored has yet another fight. This time it was against a very strong dragon that had items stolen from him. The fight was about to go down and there was no doubt Beowulf had a good battle on his hands. "He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all of its courage or strength" (Beowulf 2347-2349). Beowulf was up against a tough opponent but knew he was powerful enough for the dragon. "...Grapple with the dragon and make good my boast" (Beowulf 2520). During the fight Beowulf decided to use his armor and weapon because that is what he had the best chance with. If he had not used a weapon, then it would have not been much competition for the dragon. Beowulf would end up having this be his last battle because of his fate to die, and also the dragon’s, as they both do not survive. Even though Beowulf dies, in the process he had earned the respect from the Geats and the people of the Anglo-Saxon era. Most importantly of all, he had achieved what all Anglo-Saxon men wanted, which was…

Today was the day I lost my son and the great Beowulf is to blame. I feel it. I feel the emptiness that comes when a mother loses her child. I hear my son calling out for me, wishing I was there to help. I feel the broken bones and the screams that my child, my sweet baby boy, made while Beowulf tore him from this world. I feel the anger, and the ferocity of a mother bear, but i have failed to protect my cub. I have traveled to the surface, far from the safety and comfort of my cave beneath the water, to kill beowulf. I have captured him and i will kill him. His puny blade does no damage to me, for i am too strong for him. I am winning, the life slowly draining from Beowulf’s body, until i remember my greatest weakness; I am the only one who…

After a long time, Beowulf reaches the bottom of the lake, where Grendel's mother waits for him. She reaches for him, but his armor protects him. He tries to cut her, but his sword can't cut her. Light enters the murky water then. Beowulf is still angry, however, so he also beheads Grendel, who lies dead in the cave.…
