The Europeans, during the Age of Exploration, had an influence on both the New World across the Atlantic Ocean, and the much closer continent of Africa. In both Africa and the New World, Europeans had similar influences in that they negatively affected the natives in their search for riches such as spices and precious metals, and wherever they traveled they would spread Christianity to the natives. One example of this is when Cortes arrived in the Aztec empire he demanded they convert to Christianity, and when the Portuguese began colonizing east Africa it didn't take long for the Jesuits to come. However the spread of diseases, the slave trade, and the economic takeover of natural goods differed in the New World and Africa. Africans were accustomed to the diseases of Europe, the natives of the Americas were not enslaved as the Africans were, and the Europeans were unable to take over the natural resources of the Africans because of their stronger government structure.…

I believe that they wanted to also conquer Africa but instead just traded for goods, silver, and more slaves. I think it’s because they feared the many diseases that Africa/ns had. They also preferred that their lands were more accessible to the coast/rivers. They also noticed that Africa’s beliefs were Islamic which Europe was trying to enforce and have others embrace in…

Until 1884, almost 80% of Africa remained under traditional control, yet numerous imperialist leaders were eyeing the nation, in awe of its abundance of natural resources such as salt and its overall opportunity for commerce. Imperialist powers saw Africa as a way to show their power, harbor their navy ships and spread Christianity. Most countries in Africa were not strong enough to fend away most opposers they faced, and the stronger European nations such as Germany, France and England were aware of this. With this sense of dominance, these nations and several more moved forward in their quest to conquer Africa. European powers flooded the peninsula in hopes to get their hands on any country still available.Soon, the imperialist actions…

Once the Portuguese arrived, for example Henry the Navigator which founded the city of Sagres, their main goal was to explore and to find large quantities of gold. By the fifteen century the Portuguese achieved both of their goals, but there was something more that they wanted: maybe a better economy or maybe a faster way to earn money. With these new goals in their minds, the Portuguese started to occupy most of Africa, and started creating commerce between the two.…

Portugal was one of the, if not the only, technological and economic geniuses of the fifteenth century. As a result of their genius, Portugal was able to build one of the first caravels and sail around the coast of Africa in an attempt to find a sea route to India. As a result of this attempt, Portugal discovered and colonized a few islands that were there. They soon discovered that these islands were perfect for developing sugar plantations, which was a great money maker. Sugar soon became a humungous part of Portugal’s economy. Where there is sugar there are usually slaves, primarily African slaves. The colonization of these sugar islands began the trade with Africa for African slaves. Needless to say Portugal became extremely wealthy. Portugal anemically attempted to convert some Africans to their religion like Spain and England.(Roman Catholic eventually protestant) . Portugal’s relationship with the African people soon spoiled as most ‘Slave Master Enslaved People’ relationships did. Relations spoiled because Portugal began to interfere with existing trade between Africans and other countries, Portugal also destroyed the Arab trade routes in the Indian Ocean between Africa, Arabia and India, and Portugal also encouraged wars between rival kingdoms in Africa just to maintain the slave trade. In 1493 the Treaty of Tordesillas (line of demarcation) was created after Christopher Columbus and the Spanish found “new” land further west than the coast of Africa.…

Prince Henry the Navigator helped conquer the Muslim city of Cueta in North Africa in 1415. This was the beginning of the many explorations that the Europeans would be making into Africa throughout the centuries. By the time Henry died in 1460, the Europeans, individually the Portuguese, had established a series of trading ports along the coasts of Africa. There, they traded with the Africans for gold, silver, ivory, and other such profitable items. These Europeans saw the Africans as "barbaric" and without any religion. The Dutch established a port called the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa. They tried to Christianize them and make them civilized. Later on, they dominated Africa and took complete control over the Africans. As the found a sea route to Asia from Africa, they started trading the Africans, whom they had enslaved, with the Indians.…

In the beginning of 19th century, Europe had almost no land in Africa except for the coastal areas. In the middle of the century however, Europe became quite interested in Africa. This came from wanting to create overseas empires, also known as imperialism. European nations wanted to control the lands with the most raw material to fuel their industrial economies. Another reason was that as a nation gained colonies it increased their greatness. The one major reason I believe they colonized Africa was racism, plain and simple they thought they were better than the Africans. And of course, christian missionaries were pro imperialism. They thought that imperialism would end the slave trade and would give them a chance to convert them.…
