“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

My earliest memory of reading or writing is these old learning books that I used to read in preschool. My mom used to make me read them over and over to ingrain the information in my head; they ranged from the stars to ancient pharaohs and gave me a better background and understanding before I went to school. I used to hate reading but it slowly increased my interest and seemed to give me a better reading ability and I’ve kept the interest since then. During elementary school, we had to read a book a month, to keep ourselves reading, even though, most students dreaded it. It was often difficult to find a book I enjoyed, but when I did I read the entire book in just a few days. My peers tended to be a negative impact on my literacy because they would often joke that I was a nerd for reading, which would make me want to stray away from books.…

Many people would say that growing up with parents who could not speak english would be to my disadvantage, but I disagree. Growing up I always believed it to be exhausting having to translate and never really feeling normal. I believed it to be dragging and many times protested against it, but besides it being tiring, I also felt embarrassed. Yeah embarrassed of having to deal with my parents and not being able to communicate with them like other kids did with their parents. As I grew older the issue only grew because at that point I began to resent them for putting me through what I believed to be embarrassing moments of confusion, but all of this changed when I finally realized that my parents did the best they could with what they had.…

To Start off, I will be telling you a little bit of my background in reading and how I started to read. For as long as I can remember I remember my parents would read children books to me right before bedtime. It was the books that every kid loves being read to like Dr. Suess and Thomas the tank engine. My favorite books however where the books where there was big pictures because kids loves seeing the animation. I had a book where on each page you would press something on the page and the book would talk, which was really neat. I cannot remember at what age but maybe when I got into grade 4 or so, that is when my teachers started showing us how to read. We would read easy books but books with great humour, I really wish I knew what the books we read where but its been just a long time. I can just remember the joy I had as I…

It has been a long time since I learned to read and write. I grew up in a small town middle of nowhere in Brazil, and I lived in a coffee farm until I was 12 years old. My parents were very simple and uneducated, who lived life to work. I started school at 1st grade level (no kindergarten that time) when I was 6 years old. I don’t remember if I knew any reading or numbers, I think I didn’t know anything about reading and writing. I learned all that in the school. I remember that I learned the alphabet first, then the sounds of the letters, the different sounds of combined letter, consonants, and vowels. Then I started to learn some mixed vowels and consonants, then words. My teacher was nice but she was very strict. When she was in bad mood…

    How I Learn to Read

It was a big process in order for me to start reading, but I think that the way I learned how to read was by learning the Alphabet at first; because in order to start reading I had to be able to recognize the letters I was trying to read. After I had mastered the alphabet I started practicing with high frequency words. These words were words that we were seeing in our school books, homework, reading, and lectures. These words were placed in small sentence and short stories that the teacher gave us to take home and we had to focus on the word or letter with the high frequency. At first, we did this for a week without a test or the teacher evaluating us, because they were words that we saw everyday in our books. In addition, to what we were seeing went in levels and themes and those themes or levels were more difficulty as we went on. Then, the teacher started counting the words we read in 5 minutes in order to see our progress. This was every Friday, because he had to read short stories related to the theme of the high frequency learning process given by the instructor. We were also given homework that consisted in reading at home for ten minutes every day and that was also check on Friday. While we were doing this we were also blending sounds practicing our pronunciation and having new vocabulary.…

Ever since I was little I wanted to have a significant impact on the world to show my life is worthwhile. Obstacles have been part of my life struggles beginning at the age of three, when I was informed my mother would probably only live for one to two years, because she has an autoimmune disorder that was unidentifiable. However, my mother overcame the odds and is alive, but can’t function as a healthy individual. Thus me and my sister were home-schooled and I quickly stepped into the shoes of caretaker as my father had to work to support our family. Being a young girl and having the responsibility of cooking and cleaning and attend to my mother while she had seizures, but also having to minister to her, has ultimately changed my life.…

When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…

My memory of my how I became literate is and always will be a part of me that I will never forget. I suppose I heard the sounds around me and connected them with emotions. Crying, I noticed, got a quick response from my parents, and usually some food. My communication development was identical to every other child learning to talk. Listening. But everyone has a story behind their literacy. Mine was one day, when we were driving to the grocery store, with the radio turned on, my jam turned on. It was the ABC’s. This song was unexpected, not only because of its difference in the nature of the regular pop songs, but that it was a new song altogether. Nonetheless, I began to rock along with the catchy tune of the song. I longed for more and demanded it…

My literacy journey had a very interesting beginning. I am a first generation Mexican American, and as being first generation my first language is Spanish, everyone I interacted with when I was young was family or Hispanic. I picked up on some English from watching kid shows but I never really knew what the words meant. Prior to starting preschool, the school got me and my mother into an ELL summer class to get a head start on the school year. Up until around first grade or so I always had to meet with the ELL teacher to check on my progress and make sure I was doing okay in school.…

The most vivid, earliest moment I have of learning to write and read was when I was in kindergarten. I recall this because this was the year I met the person who I thought created a poems and rhyme book my mother use to read out loud to my baby sister and myself. I remember every night before bed, it was this blue book that my mother use to get off the bookshelf and read. This was the only way my sister and I would go to sleep. The first day of my kindergarten school, when I walked into the class room I saw that same book And a whole bunch more books. I was like ‘’WOW!!!’’ I must be in book heaven. I never saw so many books. I mean, they were all shapes, color and texture. At the time I didn’t know they were called Nursery Rhymes until I began learning more about it in my school house. There was a particular nursery rhyme that stood out to me then and it still does today because of a certain funny reason I will explain later on in my essay. As my mom and Mrs. Woolabee (whom was my kindergarten teacher) use to read to me, they allowed me to read after them and we also use to act out the stories. Their voices and what they did for some reason seemed to be the same. I don’t know if it was because I was a little girl and was just so amazed on how they both made their voices sound, how they both made me laugh or the fact they held me close as they read to me. I knew the difference from my mom verses the teacher. I guess when you are little and notice both of these females care for you, as a small child you feel a certain way. I recall during home time and school time I use to draw the pictures as they read to me. I remember writing small words like and, up, did, as I learned this rhyme. They use to read to me Jack and Jill. I still remember it. ‘’Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up got Jack, and home did trot as fast as he could caper. He went to bed and…
