How democratic is the British government
Democracy is a system of government for the people and by the people. According to Gean Rousseau the government should be answerable to the populace. This democratic system promotes participation of the people in governance. It is also a system where the people elect leaders of their choice. Democratic system promotes checks and balance of every organ in government n order to prevent autocracy and despotic rulership. From the above, democracy promotes fundamental human right and freedom of speech. The British government is believed to operate democracy but there are some systems, organs and government officials that do not conform to the principle of democracy. British government operates on democratic principle, because in this system, people are made to elect their representatives in the general elections. Britons elect members of the parliament, who represent each constituency in this nation. This is a clear case of democratic principle. The British system is democratic to a large extent because it promotes freedom of speech both by the opposition and the pressure group. In fact, British system allows the opposition to constitute a shadow cabinet that is to monitor the incumbent government in state affairs. Apart from this, the pressure group is allowed to operate unhindered, provided their operation is within the confines of the constitution. This vividly shows that the British government is highly democratic. In a democratic setting, no one is above the law or the constitution. This system operates in Britain. Her Royal Majesty (who is the ceremonial head of government) is limited by the constitution. All the royal prerogative is limited by the constitution.
