“Shopping is part of what social scientists call consumption and many social scientists suggest we now live in a Consumer Society." (Making Social Lives, 2009, Pg 13) It has been argued that what people buy and do with those things provide an indicator of the sort of person that they are. People want to feel that they belong and are part of something when they consume and factors such as income, media influence and social expectations are things to consider when arguing that consumption reflects and shapes our lifestyle and identity. Shopping is a day to day activity and a necessity, people need to feed and clothe themselves and families in order to survive but, certain factors such as what people buy and what they do with those things once they have them provide an important indicator of who they are. The media plays a vital role when considering individual and social issues in consuming because of the amount of lifestyle magazines, advertisements and fashion programmes on offer. (Making Social Lives, Chapter 1, Section 1.1, Pg 20) In addition to the above it has been argued that environmental concerns, carbon footprints and celebrity lifestyles are all factors that may be important to one person and less important to another. Other factors such as income, social expectations and peer group pressure also play a vital role.
