Study Guide for The House of
Dies Drear by Virginia Hamilton

Meet Virginia Hamilton could take a slice of fiction floating around the family and polish it into a saga.

irginia Hamilton has won many awards and honors as a writer of fiction and nonfiction and a reteller of folktales. She is the first author to receive the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for the same book—her 1974 novel for young people
M.C. Higgins, the Great. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished children’s book of the year.
Hamilton was born on March 12, 1936, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, a town similar to the one she created for Thomas Small and his family in The House of Dies Drear. Like many other writers, she credits her family for inspiring her creativity. Hamilton remembers the family stories that were passed from person to person. She says:

Hamilton grew up quite aware of her
African American heritage. She knew that many of the old houses in her hometown had once been safe havens for enslaved people escaping from the South to the North and to
Canada. Her own ancestors escaped slavery in the 1800s.
Hamilton has been interested in writing since she was a young girl. She notes, “I learned to think and to manage feelings in terms of stories.”
She began writing seriously at Antioch
College in her hometown in Ohio. She attended the school on a scholarship, majored in writing, and composed her first short stories.
Before finishing college, she moved to New
York City, where she continued writing and worked different jobs to support herself.
In 1960 Hamilton married Arnold Adoff, a poet. As newlyweds, the couple traveled to
Spain and to northern Africa. Visiting Africa had been a long-time dream of Hamilton’s, and the country made a strong impression on her.
This trip would eventually influence her first novel, Zeely, which was published in 1967.
After fifteen years in New York City,
Hamilton returned to her home

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl are two of the most influential autobiographies of slavery. Douglass’s experiences are similar to Harriet Jacobs’s, but they have their differences. Jacobs said “O, you happy free women, contrast your New Year’s day with that of a poor bondwoman! With you it is a pleasant season, and the light of day is blessed.” Douglass said “The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege.”…

Frederick Douglass was a newspaper editor, lecturer, United States minister to Haiti, and a very successful writer despite living a childhood of slavery. In the essay by Frederick Douglass, Learning to Read and Write, Douglass describes his personal experiences as a young black slave during the 1800’s. Similarly, in another essay by Maya Angelou, Graduation, Angelou describes her experiences as a black girl in the 1960’s. Both authors bring out the challenges as a child that they had to overcome to become successful. Although Frederick Douglass and Maya Angelou agree that education for blacks was extremely challenging, Douglass provides a more convincing argument because he became literate under more challenging circumstances.…

1968’s “Night of the Living Dead” is one of the most influential zombie movies of all time. Despite its extremely low budget the movie was a great success. I actually believe that the limited budget is what made the movie successful. Due to the fact that it was shot in black-and-white, it gave the film an unique look contributing to its style. In various instances during the movie it the movie looks like a documentary, which adds to the realism of the movie. But what makes the movies scary? The zombies are the main element of horror in Night of the Living Dead. The viewer is afraid of the threat the zombies represent. They carry the horror, hold our attention, instill dread and act as the prime motivator. During the 1960s, this movie really shocked its audiences with its gory violent scenes and twisted plot lines. The brutal scenes in the movie produce a type of “pain” on the viewer – the images of the vicious deaths allows the audience to envision what it would be like to be in that situation. So, when we view a scene like the eating of the flesh from the victims of the car explosion, we are reacting bodily to the actions of the zombies. Scenes such as that one feel and look real to the viewer contributing to the horror and truthfulness of the movie.…

“The House” by Kim Krupp Pepe is a selection about a girl and her memories of her old house as a child. The main idea is that she is grown up and will never experience the same memories as she once had, but she also cherishes her memories of the house that she once lived in as a child. For example, in the last paragraph, she states that “Now I’m always kind of torn between being sad because I feel like a child and yet knowing I am not and can never be again. Another part of me feels happy for having a place where all my past is stored and secreted away.”…

Harry Dresden was going to dinner with Karrin Murphy. A relationship that remained platonic for 12 books even though the characters were in love, and then Dresden gets shot through the chest and falls dead into Lake Michigan (Butcher). 12 years of refusing to act led to inner pain for the pair even after the return of Dresden from the death-like state he was in. Andre Dubus’ Killings is a story of acting on ones feelings, and not waiting for everything to just fix itself. The story constantly is mentioning conflicting aspect of action and inaction, then the idea of acting when you can sets the scene for the resolution, which is shown by Matt, the main character, putting a bullet in the head of his son’s killer. This will be presented by showing one such paradox that is shown in the text, then by showing how action is…

The nature of existence in the Kingdom of the Dead is dissimilar to the Christian ideal of heave; the Kingdom of the Dead is a dismal place to be. Odysseus describes them as “shambling, shiftless dead” (p. 251). Existing in the Kingdom of the Dead is not a pleasing affair. People exist in death exactly how they died; the “men of war” are still wearing the bloody armor they died in (p. 250). The dead seem to be able to remember who they are, but they are not able to speak until Odysseus allows them to touch or “approach” the blood Odysseus spilt from the sheep (p. 254). Once they do so, the dead can only speak the truth (p. 254). If Odysseus were to ignore them, they would fade away (p. 254). To reach the dead, Odysseus uses milk and honey,…

In 2003, Rob Zombie wrote and directed House of 1000 Corpses, a film about four young adults who end up off the beaten path and in the house of an evil, murderous family. The film takes place in a small, run down rural town during the 1970s. In the director’s commentary, Zombie describes his motion picture as a “70s exploitation horror film.”(House of 1000 Corpses.) He also mentions that he was inspired by the alleged Manson family home videos. He makes subtle parallels between the Firefly family and the Manson family, and he effectively utilizes the mise-en-scene to incorporate his inspiration into the film. Rob Zombie’s fame is due to his music, and the film’s score is an important contrivance used to complement the theme, that there is hell on Earth and the house is the gateway. The actual lyrics to the songs played throughout the film suggest, and even sometimes foreshadow, the fate of anyone who enters the house. House of 1000 Corpses uses the mise-en-scene elements of setting, costumes, and film score, and the director uses Manson family references, in the “I Remember You” and “Run, Rabbit, Run” scenes, to stress the theme of the film.…

    The Killings by Dubus

How can one person decide to take a man's life? How can another man then decide to take a man's life in the act of revenge? Is there a difference to killing for the sake of killing or killing for the sake of revenge, or are they just two different shades of the same color? Many different people of today's society have differing views of what justice is, and how justice should be served to those who are guilty of such crimes as rape, kidnapping, or murder. "Killings", by Andre Dubus attempts to illustrate the life of the Fowler family after Richard Strout shoot's Frank Fowler. From the very beginning of the story, the seed of revenge is planted when Matt Fowler's other son, Steve says, “I should’ve killed him. He bit his lower lip, wiped his eyes…

The only thing in life that is one-hundred percent certain is death. Humans go through life ignoring this ultimate fate until the day they are confronted. What a civilization does with their deceased tells a lot about their culture and beliefs in an afterlife. Whether a person is cremated or the body is preserved, whether they are buried in the ground or placed in a tomb, and how their final place is decorated all show their cultures values and beliefs and what kind of person they were. At the Getty Villa museum one piece called the Sarcophagus with Scenes from the life of Achilles depicts how a Roman sarcophagus can show you their beliefs and customs.…
