Market structure within the hotel industry has a few unique characteristics. All firms in the hotel industry operate with the same parameters and restrictions such that they operate within a fixed capacity, services are perishable and non-recoverable once the opportunity has passed, and an extremely labor intensive structure. Unlike manufacturing or production industries, hotels operate a fixed number of rooms, and without new construction or expansion of an existing hotel, they cannot increase capacity to capture a fluctuating…

Anton Cahoon left a successful career in manufacturing to purchase an independent motel, near an interstate highway exit, a short distance from a rapidly expanding resort area. Mr. Cahoon relied only upon passersby as clientele with little other advertising. For the first two years operations went smoothly, however the Goodnight Inn had not become profitable. While occupancy rates stabilized near 55%, they were still well below the industry average of 68%. Anton had run his motel avoiding “unnecessary expenses”, and as a result had a 40% price advantage over the full-service hotels in his market area. Customer surveys found the GoodNight Inn acceptable. After much thought, Anton has begun to consider affiliating with a either Holiday Inn or Days Inn, both offering the advantages of a central reservation system, and their national marketing presence.…

When two similar companies such as two hotels, are offering very similar products and are in a strong competing situation, integration is a popular move. It can be a voluntary decision by both companies or it can be the take-over of one company by another. Benefits include greater sales, which result in larger revenue and expansion opportunities. Complimentary reasons tend to be the realisation that one hotel offers something that the other hotel doesn’t and vice versa. If the two combined it would create one stronger hotel.…

At a recent staff meeting, the general manager of The Times Hotel asked if anyone wanted to address the group. The director of housekeeping indicated he was at a loss in trying to work with the front desk clerks. He had repeatedly called the desk clerks last Tuesday to let them know that general housecleaning would be performed on the seventh and eighth floors on Wednesday morning and that they should not assign rooms on those floors to guests on Tuesday night. When the cleaning crew came to work on Wednesday morning, they were faced with 14 occupied rooms on the seventh floor and 12 occupied rooms on the eighth floor. This cost the hotel several hundred dollars because the cleaning crew was from an outsourced contract company, which charged the hotel a basic fee for failure to comply with the contract. The front office manager retorted that a bus group called two weeks ago and asked if any rooms were available because there was a mix-up in room rates at the group’s original hotel. The front office manager indicated something must have gone awry in the computer system. After all, this was a good opportunity to bring in 26 additional room-nights.…
