Hope
In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, written by Fitzgerald, hopefulness plays an immense role. Hope is something that Fitzgerald utilizes as what transfers characters and allows them to have the will to keep searching for their dreams and ambitions. What Fitzgerald shows that helps Jay Gatsby gain all his hope is the love he has for Daisy Buchanan and The Green Light. Fitzgerald reveals many obstacles Gatsby has to face in order to pursue his ambitions and also shows how he stays hopeful in order to reach his unattainable dreams. In “The Great Gatsby”, Fitzgerald describes how hope takes a major role in Jay Gatsby’s life and decision to pursue the American Dream.

Long before Jay Gatsby was “great” he was a small town kid with big dreams. He orders his life around one desire which is to be reunited with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost due to the fact that he was not wealthy. With determination and the undivided hope that Jay Gatsby has, he is able to conquer his quest, leading him from poverty to wealth. He knows Daisy very well and knows that he has to be successful in order for her to be with him once again. When Daisy goes to visit Gatsby’s mansion, his shirts are what attracts her. She cries over them, showing how superficial she is which is why Gatsby states “her voice is full of money” (Fitzgerald). Although money is a large part of the American dream, through Gatsby one sees that just having money is not enough. In chapter six in particular, Fitzgerald clearly points out the distinction between “new money” and “old money” and regardless of the amount of wealth one accumulates, where the money comes from and how long it has been around matters just as much as how much of it there is. Hope played a crucial part in “The Great Gatsby”. Hope is what allows the characters to transfer and have the will and perseverance to keep searching for their dreams and pursing in the goals in life.
