Hope In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
Even though some people are different and are looked on to having little meaning in life, it does not mean that they should lose hope. The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is a story about a young boy who has a condition that may end his life, but that does not mean that he should give up. Throughout the story, Doodle displayed the traits of being dependent and hopeful. Since Doodle is unable to do many things by himself he is very dependent, specifically his older brother. “I put him on my shoulder and carried him down the ladder, and when we were outside in the bright sunshine, he clung to me crying, don’t leave me, don’t leave me” (James Hurst pg 353). Doodle’s older brother had to carry him everywhere they went since Doodle could not walk, therefore Doodle would depend on his older brother to always be there. “The doctor said that with his weak heart this strain would probably kill him, but it didn’t. He’d push himself up” (pg 351). Everyone thought that Doodle would die, including his doctor and his family, but he worked very hard with the help of his brother to prove those people wrong. When Doodle was only two years old, he would push himself really hard and would try to walk and crawl all by himself. He stayed hopeful, and he kept on trying to move and do other things on his own. “After many week of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds” (pg 354). Although it took a few weeks, Doodle could stand all by himself. He kept on staying positive and was hoping that he would eventually be able to walk. Doodle was told that he would never be able to walk, but he never gave up and practiced for a whole year until he was able to accomplish this goal.
