1. Describe some of the influence of Latin music in the US in the early part of the twentieth century.
Latin American musicians greatly influenced Jazz musicians in the early part of the twentieth century, and this gave birth to the Latin-jazz genre at the time. Modern dancing styles also originated from the Latin America jazz moves that were combined with an afro-Cuban beat
2. What was the significance of “Machito and His Afro-Cubans”?
The Machito and his Afro-Cubans helped create salsa music and Cubop as well as redefined Afro-Cuban Jazz. The group made great recordings in their time and after his death, Machito's son become the leader of The Machito Orchestra.
3. How did Dizzy Gillespie incorporate Latin music into his music? Gillespie was a prime mover in the creation of Afro-Cuban-jazz ( or Cubop ), a style that brought Cuban folk and popular idioms into a jazz context his interest being sparked by Cab Calloway's lead trumpeter Mario Bauza who introduced him to percussionist Chano Pozo in 1947, Pozo was fatally shot in a bar in '48 after contributing to Gillespies classic Afro- Cuban recordings Manteca, Guarachi Guaro and Cubana Be, Cubana Bop
