In this paper, I will attempt to answer the following questions from the Hootsuite case study. 1.) To what extent is Hootsuite’s use of social media consistent with recommendations about matching the richness of media to the situation at hand? 2.) How does Hootsuite’s use of social media tend to eliminate barriers to communication? 3.) Which of the downsides to social media are occurring at Hootsuite? 4.) What are the primary benefits of social media at Hootsuite? 5.) What does this case teach you about the use of social media in today’s organizations?

In regards to question 1, based on the information in the case study presented, Hootsuite has a good grasp on the importance of using the correct amount of media richness, based on the situations

Social media breaks down physical barriers - there is almost no limit to the number of people who can be immediately reached, regardless of their distance from the message originator. Social media can also help in breaking down semantic barriers by allowing instantaneous communication. Because social media allows for faster communication, it makes it easier for people to ask for clarification in regards to semantics. Social media can also break down social barriers. Looking at Hootsuite’s website and videos, they really do a good job of going over how well it helps people to keep track of all their different social media accounts, so that they can maximise the potential of their social media use. It also allows for social media scheduling, so that in one day, a social media user could compose an entire week's worth of posts on a variety of website, all from Hootsuite’s toolbar. This saves a tremendous amount of time and effort, while maximising social media’s potential.

In regards to their company’s inner workings, Hootsuite has found ways to make social media incredibly effective for themselves. It has been effective in improving their company’s brand image. I went on Twitter and found that Hootsuite has two Twitter accounts (@hootsuite and @Hootsuite_Help). They have over 8 million Twitter followers. They also have a Facebook page, but it has significantly less followers. This did not surprise me, as the case study seemed to suggest that the company had a preference towards
