This subconscious link may attract certain people and repel others. When families with small children go out to eat, they may not want to go into a restaurant that reminds them of bars and rowdy people. All of the parking lots near the arena were packed with cars, bumper to bumper. People were running against the brutally frozen air from blocks away to get inside of the warm arena and take their seats. Flooded with people trying to get their snacks before the game, the paths to finding an open seat grew increasingly smaller. Vendors yelled to advertise their merchandise, enticing the people who were crowding the arena. The smell of buttery popcorn filled the air, along with the smell of smoke from the grills. Vendors ran frantically, selling everything that they had and struggling to create more product. The pre-game experience of a Red Wings game at The Joe is like no other. Finding parking and joining the sea of red jerseys rambling the streets brings immediate excitement. The first stop is the famous Hockey Town Café where savory food is enjoyed while also spending time admiring all the pictures, jerseys, and history from years past. Naturally, the server will chit chat about the upcoming game and current players’ stats while game highlights are being broadcasted on immense televisions that surround the vast space. Outside the Coliseum is the diehard, devoted fan base. At 7 am the parking lot is filled with diehard fans that come early to tailgate prior to the game. As you make your way to the entrance of the Coliseum the spices and smell of perfectly seasoned food attacks your senses. You can’t help but notice the camaraderie and friendships formed while the alcohol flows. It is in the parking lot you see the dedication and years of loyalty displayed by its fans. In the front row nearest to the stadium stands the most dedicated fan. An older man, scruffy looking stands next to his Winnebago. He is dressed in the traditional garbs for the day. His Winnebago is covered from front to back in Cardinal and Gold; from his speakers blares the schools song ‘Fight On’. It would not be much of a stretch to say that being a Mizzou Tiger runs in my blood. I grew up getting plenty of exposure to Mizzou from my grandmother, a diehard Tigers fan that attends almost every home basketball game, my mother, who is herself a Mizzou alumnus, as well as my older cousins who both graduated from Mizzou, giving the University a constant presence in my life. Then, as I reached high school I received additional exposure to the University as a result of it hosting the state tournaments for Speech and Debate, Science Olympiad, and basketball throughout my four years, however I truly fell in love with Mizzou when I came to visit for a Scholar’s Day event the summer before my senior year.
