Honor Codes Should Be Revised
The honor codes- A system of rules with set disciplinary actions- implemented in my school by faculty should be revised so that students can contribute to the development of the type of academic environment they think they need so that everyone in the community completes their work fairly- creating a culture of academic morality. Also so that people who chose not to are punished to an extent that their peers would find most reasonable, for any particular violation that could occur.

Student revision of codes would also initiate a better more trusting relationship between students and faculty. “Implicit in an honor code is a belief in the integrity of human beings; it also provides students a clear explanation of the importance of behaving with the integrity and the expectation that our resulting actions will increase the trust and respect in the LA [Lawrence Academy] community.” wrote Alyssa Vangelli(source B). Revisions that students agree with would easily allow more students to contribute to the establishment and enforcement of honor codes. “... a more important factor seems to be the peer culture that develops on honor code campuses- a culture that makes most forms of serious cheating socially unacceptable among the majority of students. An Honor Code is a great thing to have for students. It is a code where students are expected to not cheat and report others for cheating. It is a great thing to have for students because it holds them up to certain standards and shows what is expected of them. Ultimately depending on how it is enforced it can help but it all rides on the consensus of the students, and while Foothills Academy should not implement a honor code there are steps that can be taken to promote academic integrity on its campus. Seminars on cheating and plagiarism should be held to have students better understand and recognize when it is happening, after-school help and tutoring should be promoted more so students don’t have to rely on cheating to get the grades they want. To actually spur a change in these students unsavory habits we need to make a change to help them in the right direction, not just make them sign a…

Some ways that my school can become stricter in the honors system are, possibly using cameras to watch kids from above as stated in Source A. The school staffs could become better at detecting cheaters. One way that this could happen is getting a computer program that detects plagiarism. What students need to know is that their name will not be brought. That is why these programs are being held up in success. Students are afraid of, “What if I get I reported on?” Cheating in schools is pretty much on-going. Throughout your entire life you are taught from infancy and adolescence what is right from what is wrong. Once you enter the school system, even in the first years of pre-kindergarten, we are all informed that honesty is a key virtue in your education and in your life overall. The character trait of honesty is religiously enforced from your first day of elementary school until your last day of high school, which leaves us to no surprise that colleges take the honesty of each student just as serious. Colleges such as Georgia Military College, Georgia Southern University, and the University of Alabama are a few colleges that distribute amongst their student body and faculty an "Honor Code." An Honor Code is a statement of honor to represent the college, faculty/staff, and the student body as a respectable and honest place of higher education. The Honor Code is to disengage in dishonesty and to make sure that everyone inside the school is bettering their education as well as bettering the representation of the entire college.…
