Honor
Honor is like personality: it changes over time, it’s different person to person, and culture effects it. Honor can be and is defined in different ways by different people. Honor can be seen as a simple good deed or risking something precious or very important for the sake of someone else. Honor has changed over time from the past to the present and it’s different throughout cultures, American or not.
Honor in the past is very different from now. Alexander Welsh said,”In the early 17th century [...]upperclassmen in Europe and the United States regularly engaged in duels on ‘fields of honor’ to defend their manhood”(Welsh.What is Honor?). Honor in the past is incredibly contrasting to one another. In the beginning of the 17th century men would duel each other to defend their glory. Honor now is mostly about social life; do you party or stay home?, are you single or in a relationship?, etc. Honor now is based on what you have or haven’t done and if it was ‘wild’ or not. …show more content…
“However hard the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and give his life for his country is the noblest development of mankind”(MacArthur.Duty, Honor, Country). In America honor is often seen as a man or woman going out to serve for their country and risk their life in the process. No matter how hard war may seem a soldier who is given the chance to serve their country and takes that opportunity is a hero. “Around a thousand campfires, I have witnessed that enduring fortitude, that patriotic self-abnegation, and that invincible determination which have carved his statue in the hearts of his people”(MacArthur.Duty, Honor, Country).
