I chose this article that was from the National Geographic called “The Plight of the Honeybee.” This showed how essential honeybees are to us; and how bees are one of the main reasons we have vegetations; such as apples, strawberries, blueberries, and onions. This article also showed the main reasons why and how important they are to our common foods. It contained statistics showing the reader that, approximately 45 percent of the honeybee species has either died or flown way from the beekeeper’s farm. This percentage is very important and critical to us because we reply on these pollinators to provide vegetation to our world. It emphasized on the value of honeybees and how important they are to our common foods. Another big topic talked about in this article were the in causes of death for the bees and the main reason for them leaving the bee farm and never coming back. There were many studies done by great organizations to reveal these causes of all the deaths and departures. The honeybees are being threatened by not only little things such as changing climate and weather, but by chemical exposure. At the end of the article, there was much concern on whether or not the industry was going to be successful. It showed doubts that it was going to decline and dissolve just as the bees themselves are doing.
The National Geographic chose very credible sources when it came to retrieving information. They used studies from universities such as Penn State University, studies from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, and even professional fourth-generation beekeepers. In Penn State University, a study was shown that a colony collapse disorder, also known as CCD, has dwindled in the manner of cyclical diseases. Bees are still battling for their lives and their colonies are weaker than ever.
