Introduction:

Roxy had seen the homeless man in the neighborhood before, but he had never looked so broken. She was just trying to get lunch at her local Burger King, but the homeless man caught her eye. He was sobbing at one of the tables and seemed utterly alone.

Instead of driving away, Roxy parked her car and got out. She took a photo of the man before sitting down next to him. The man told her his name was “Pops.” He quickly opened up to Roxy about how sad and lonely he was.

It definitely looked like he had missed a few meals and had a hard life. While she could not do much to help, she decided that she could at least buy him lunch.

As Roxy got into line, she pulled out her phone. She was going to post his photo on Facebook and see if anyone could help him. As she finished posting the photo, she noticed an advertisement for a casino. It offered 133 spins for a small deposit. Roxy hesitated for a moment. Then, she clicked the button. If she could afford to spend $10 on Pops' lunch, she could easily afford the small deposit.

She continued to play the game as she waited in line, but it did not take long for something amazing to happen. After just six spins, she hit the progressive jackpot. When she realized that she had won, she could not believe her eyes. Immediately, she thought about all of the things that she could do with the money. Then, she remembered seeing Pops sobbing earlier. She decided that she had to do something amazing with the money. When she returned to the table, she told Pops to meet her at the Burger King the next

Just as poetry is a permanent mark of feelings that last forever on paper, tattoos are permanent symbols that last forever on the skin. Tattoos and poetry can easily be combined such as in Kim Addonizio’s sonnet, “First Poem for You,” the speaker admires her partner’s nature themed tattoos in a darkened room. This may seem to be a simple poem, but by utilizing tattoos as symbols, including tactile and visual imagery in her poem, and using the sonnet as her structure, Addonizio laments about the true meaning of relationships and their longevity.…

Using sociological imagination, helped me looked past the individual person and brought me to focus on the social aspects that may have caused this negative outcome. Did she lose her job because she was uneducated or lazy? The answer to this is no, unemployment has been a problem in our hometown and she did not become lazy all of a sudden. This negative outcome was due to something else outside of her individual self-changed. She thanked me, gave me a hug and said I was the only one in a long time who actually looked at her as a person. I knew sitting down on the sidewalk downtown, eating lunch with a homeless person was considered breaking a social norm. I gave another homeless person who was a man this time $20 and said have a blessed day. His eyes enlarged when he saw the bill and asked me was I sure. I told him I was positive because everyone goes through hard times to where we wish someone would be there for us. He shook my hand and said “Thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me.” Homeless is a problem in our society to where it evokes strong reactions from people but we must understand this problem as a social rather than an individualistic…
