Homeless Assignment

A-For my abnormal assignment I went to Bellevue and stood outside of a store dressed as a homeless person. As people walked by me I held my card board sign that read “Abandoned by my parents and lost anything will help”. I dressed myself in ripped clothing and bagging clothing to display how poor I was. I also did not shower and looked very dirty by putting dirt marks on my face.
B- As people walked by me I got a real feel for people and society. Many different shades of people passed me as I asked for money. They responded in many ways with some just looking at me and having pity for my current situation and others feeling no feelings for me at all. There were other people who also ignored me pretending I was not there as if I was just a paper
By putting myself in the shoes of a homeless individual I experienced great shame and embarrassment. I could not imagine how real homeless people who may have kids and families to support would feel that they could not sustain themselves yet alone another soul. I learned that these peoples have very hard lives and must have a difficult time starting a new. While most people have access to the necessities and complain that they do not have enough. It taught be to be thankful for what I have and do not judge others. As in this project nobody offered me money and many said they did not have money on them. I felt very vulnerable and helpless like I could not do anything to get money to sustain myself if I was really homeless. Even though they may have known that I was not homeless the thing that I learned was that society really is a place for the rich to thrive and poor to suffer. Society accepts people who are rich in the material and molded into norms that society see fit. Homeless do not fit on this scale and are like outsiders who do not fit anywhere in this hierarchy. They are seen as a burden and taught me that helping the poor is a good thing since if you were one you would want compassionate humans to do the
