Homecoming Parade Observation
For this observation, I decided to watch the Homecoming Parade 2015. I chose to observe this event because I would like to understand its importance to gather multiple organizations related to Southern Illinois University, and for which, supporting the Saluki Spirit and Pride is deeply connected with the academic life of mostly undergraduate students. I have attended this event in two prior occasions. The first one was quite disappointed because it did not meet with my own definition of a parade. I am from a country where parades are big and important events, and which are seen as a representation of our culture and traditions. The first homecoming parade I watched was a brief chain of trucks full of students cheering in non-understandable …show more content…
I was in the corner of College St. and University St. It is a good spot for this event; there is a big parking lot nearby where I was able to park, another good point of this spot is that some parts of the sidewalk are covered with grass which makes this spot more comfortable to sit on instead of sitting on the concrete sidewalks. I got to the spot I selected at 10:50, the parade was by starting, I could hear the bands playing in the distance. There are some groups of people close to me, there are some other groups in front of me, but it was not crowded. There was a group of six people on my left. There was a couple on my left, and another couple in front of me. Just in front of me, there is a laundromat, there are some people close to its doors and windows. I thought, they are in those spots because they provide a kind of shelter against the light rain that was falling at that …show more content…
At this point, I am covered with the little edging of the laundromat window, but I am not able to observe the parade, neither to take any notes in this spot. I had one hand holding my notebook, with the other, I was handling to take notes. I was impossible to write anything under the rain, I decided to record the parade using my iPad, and use this video as notes to write my observation report. The rain was getting heavier; anyway, I took my chair, put my rain poncho, moved closer to the street, and took my iPad to record the parade. My notes were getting messy because of the water; I regretted my decision of observing this event, I knew it was going to rain on Saturday, but I though it is still a good idea to make my observation of this event. However, it was not a cold rain, it was quite pleasant to feel the rain falling and seeing people happily watching the

This year’s event we did the theme of Remembering Our Students/ Recordando Nuestros Estudiantes. In relation to the current movements regarding Black Lives Matter, police brutality, Ayotzinapa 43, school shootings, and indigenous women missing. I think this event is important to our campus, because SCSU is a diverse campus with very close minded individuals. So this brings the aspect of culture and tradition with the Dia de Los Muertos celebration and MEChA’s activist focus of political issues. These two combined can provide knowledge and awareness to those students who are unaware or misinformed. As well as taking on the problem of cultural appropriation with the recent American popularization of sugar skulls and Dia de…

Soonerthon is a year-long fundraising event ending with a twelve-hour dance marathon in the spring. All the proceeds raised benefits The Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City through funding medical research and family support programs. The programming committee is in charge of planning every minute of the twelve-hour event dance marathon. Within the committee, my personal responsibility was to design and organize a children’s carnival at the main event for the “miracle kids” from the hospital. The joy that radiated from the children that passed through the carnival was contagious, not only to myself but also to the other 2,000 OU students that attended the Soonerthon event as well.…

The Kansas Jayhawks mascot was the first thing to catch my eye as I entered Allen Fieldhouse for the first time on January 20th, the day KU played against Baylor. The mascot was so big it stretched across the entire floor. Several other details seemed to catch my eye as well, like the glowing “KANSAS” letters that touched the wall next to the overpriced gift shop, the many show cases of KU basketball players and the illustrated sign that hung above the girls basketball show case that read, “Pay Heed, All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”.…

People from different cities, and states come down just for this event. There are six stages, dozens of rides, and a full gallery’s worth of art, cool off zones, vendors, food and beverages. We were surrounded by the smell of popcorn and cotton candy. It felt like the carnival you liked to go to as a kid. Everywhere we went there were people dressed like rainbows. Everybody was dressed in so many colors, and dressed like clowns, with different costumes. The…

Like Robert X. Cringely says in his article “Facebook Puts Your Privacy on Parade”, Facebook owner, Mark Zuckerberg is having problems with his “privacy policy.” It all begins when Zuckerberg speaks for many at a ceremony saying that “Everyone is okay with their information being viewed by others.” Cringely goes on to talk about Zuckerbergs Social norm policy, meaning you can get away with just about anything in todays world compared to previous years. While talking about it, Cringley mentioned how Zuckerberg put everyones information non private without many knowing, however his was only public for a day. The article also mentions how the majority of the people who don’t care about information being public are those who buy and sell identity. The Privacy issue was a big deal to many but the severity depended on the person. Cringely called Zuckerbergs idea a “beginners mind” as it got him in trouble with 350 million of his users for potentially harming and putting them in risk. Then there was the other half of course, who posted and shared naked pictures and other eye sores to the social media page. Cringely’s part of the article focused more on what the public wanted while Zuckerberg focused more on what could bring him money.…

    New Orleans and Mardi Gras

    • 1796 Words
    • 8 Pages

New Orleans was left permanently changed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Mardi Gras season presents an opportunity for locals and tourists alike to collaboratively define this new and changed city. Carnival and Mardi Gras day itself can be viewed as theatrical performances in which local New Orleanians and tourists are involved in multiple dramatic interactions to present an ideal city and celebration. These reciprocal interactions between actor and audience result in a certain presentation of the festival, and of the City of New Orleans and often involves hiding the problems and devastating history that is very much a part of the city and festivities. Tourists from all over the world flock to the city to act in and be an audience member to the series of formal, ritualized parades and balls which take place between the Twelfth Night and Lent. The celebration is reinvented by its performance teams and audiences each year and thus, its meaning is constantly being renegotiated. The first formal masked parade presented by an organized krewe, or performance team consisting of city locals working together to stage the performance of Mardi Gras, took place in 1857 (Cohen 110). Each krewe has a distinct name, performance team members, and personal front. Unique ritual paradigms, such as the exchange of beads for disrobement, are created and enacted in which mutual understanding of the situation is necessary. The success of the presentation is determined not only by the krewe 's performance but by the audience 's acceptance of the krewe 's performance as believable, and their willingness to overlook mistakes. Thus, defining Mardi Gras and the City of New Orleans is a cooperative dramaturgical process dependent on the cooperation of actors and audience members. The product of this interaction between audience members and actors is a working, malleable definition of Mardi Gras ' and New Orleans ' self.…
