Homeboy Industries is a great program that gives ex-gang members a second chance. Homeboy Industries gives former gang every opportunity possible to ensure their success. This type of intervention offers jobs, job training, tattoo removal service, and therapeutic counseling. Homeboy industries addresses many issues that these individuals face and ensures its success through use of therapy and job skills. I defiantly think this program should be implemented in the juvenile justice program. A program like Homeboy Industries would offer Juveniles marketable job skills and training, as well as a way to potentially generate income. Therapy and drug counseling services would also play a major role, since many juveniles are in desperate need of some

    As I have read about the main causes of status offenses, many of these teens live in abusive or neglectful families or have gang influence. They see no purpose in going to school due to feeling as though they will not receive the help they need to succeed from their family or community. My solution is to have these teens be administered into programs in school or in the community that promote success and a safe way to promote behavior acceptable to the world. The programs I suggest could simply be recreational in nature at first, such as an afterschool program, sports, or study group, then slowly grow to provide guidance of families and individuals. I personally had friends throughout middle school and high school that dealt with family issues that lead them to “act out” and seek attention where it lacked. Only a few changed due to becoming part of groups offered in school and by the community such as chess club, club tennis, and many others. Although this possible solution requires catching them before they go through the juvenile system it is not hard to be aware of the signs exhibited by possible offenders. In whole I am suggesting a redirection of finances by the community to offer alternative ways to deal with these burdened teens in a noncriminal manner.     By reading this book, I learned a lot about teenagers’ critical situations at juvenile hall. This book gave me a greater insight and deeper understanding of what their lives are like and the challenges they face in this place. I also learned that the legal system is not doing a great deal to help these young kids mend their lives. They are not being offered counseling or therapy which could help facilitate a great deal of things for them such as, getting a better orientation of a path for them to follow, dealing with the excessive amount of stress they face in a healthy way and learning tools for becoming effective members of society once they get out of that place. This book gave me a broader view of the factors that could have potentially contributed and played a big role in these teenagers getting engaged with gangs or committing these crimes. Most of these teenagers, to not say all, come from a very dysfunctional family where they were either battered by the father, had no positive role model to follow or no parents at all. Probably most of them joined gangs to feel they belonged to a group or where part of a family. I learned how miserable they feel by being in this place and the feelings they experience such as, loneliness, confusion, depression, no sense of personal worth and extreme stress. Many of them feel like they just want to die. All these feelings are not being managed by therapy or counseling but rather by just having regular nurses give them psych drugs which is very sad. I learned that these young kids are in great need of affection especially from their mothers and how much a compliment means to them.
