    One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was a story about one man’s journey to sanity and the antagonists and protagonists that helped or hindered him along the way. Chief’s character struggled with his own sense of identity & his abilities, possibly from past failures. Everyone treated Chief as a “dumb mute” but Randall somehow knew that he was capable of much more. By believing in him and using the technique of modeling, Randall was able to teach him to play basketball and eventually able to communicate with him. Randall celebrated Chief’s strength and size which let Chief to feel,”as strong as a mountain” and gave him the ability to escape. Randall sacrificed his own freedom and eventually his sanity and life for the patients in the institution. He saw the injustice that Nurse Ratchett was inflicting upon the patients and set out to do what in a strange way is what a therapeutic nurse should have done. He (in his own way) communicated to Billy that there was no shame in him feeling sexual attraction toward a female. When Billy began to think rationally and not from a place of shame, his stutter disappeared. Nurse Ratchett hated the usurping of her authority that Randall created and purposely mentally tortured Billy by bringing up his mother and threatening to tell her he had had sex with the woman Randall snuck in. Billy had obviously had his development compromised in what Freud would call the “Latency Stage”. He felt the need to hide his sexuality and was unable to cope when Nurse Ratchett said she was going to tell his mother and consequently committed suicide.…

    Greg is upset over losing Rowley as his best friend, though his mother tries to cheer him up by telling him that friends come and go. Since Rowley Jefferson and Abigail Brown became a couple at the end of the previous book, the two friends have become more and more distant, very noticably even within nine and a half days. There were many things Greg and Rowley used to do together, such as blow bubbles with chocolate milk cartons that they can't do now, because Abigail disapproves of it. Greg doesn't like how Abigail is trying to shape Rowley, and even believes she is starting to use him. Greg states it gets to the point where Rowley isn't allowed his own opinions anymore, but is simply just following Abigail's. Many plans, such as a snowball fight on a nice day, haven't gone ahead, and when Greg confronts Rowley, he taunts Greg by telling him he's just jealous that he has a girlfriend. Also, Rowley is the only one who can bail Greg out of the fact his English teacher, Mr. Blakely, only accepts essays written in cursive, but also, usually, Rowley scouts ahead and checks for any dog poop whilst they are walking to school, but without Rowley, Greg is having to watch out for the poop himself and avoid a very nasty Rottweiler whilst walking to school. And then Abigail starts using Rowley to carry her books. Greg used to use Rowley to do the same thing.…

    Marvin Macy’s childhood is troubled by parents that view their children as burdens. The children are beaten nightly, only to finally be left to the mercies of the town in which they live. However the main setting of this book should be the attic and the small, cramped room the kids stay in. The attic was full of dust, mice, spider webs, ancient furniture and dirty mattresses. There was only one window, which barely showed any sunlight because it was always closed. The small room where they slept was stuffy, hot, but chilly at the same time because it was dim, without any natural coming in from anywhere, because as again, the evil grandmother keeps the shadow down so no one would notice the kids. The places in the book seems real to me because it was the 1930's and 50's, which still had mansions around that people live in with dirty attics.…

    A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen is my favorite play that we read this semester. A main reason I liked this play was because of the writer himself. Ibsen is a realistic writer who took his problems from his day and brought it to life on stage. A Doll’s House deals with where women stand in their marriage and society. Ibsen felt injustice to what society was doing around him. A Doll’s House is about a Married couple named Nora and Torvald. Nora borrows a lot of money from a man named Krogstad , who happened to work for her husband. She did this because when her husband got sick he said that he needed to get out of the country to get better. Nora was only trying to do her best for her husband. She never told him of this loan and has been secretly paying it by saving from her household allowance. Her husband thinks her careless and childlike, and often calls her his doll. When he is appointed bank director, his first act is to relieve a man who was once disgraced for having forged his signature on a document. Krogstad, is the person Nora has borrowed her money. Nora forgot that she forged her father's signature in order to get the money. Krogstad threatens to reveal Nora's crime and tell her husband and everyone. Krogstand wants Nora to talk Torvald into keeping his job. Nora tries to but Torvald thinks of Nora as a child who cannot understand the value of money or business. When Torvald discovers that Nora has forged her father's name, he is ready to disclaim his wife even though she had done it for him .Nora then tells Torvald she is leaving him and her children. This play was sort of mysterious and interesting. I liked it because it showed how society was a long time ago for women and showed that Nora realized to move on with life and become a independent person which is abnormal in this time period for a women.…
