Home Depot fix or not Lady?
Home Depot is a home improvement retailer that is trying to stay with the other rival home improvement stores like Lowes. Home Depot was founded in 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia the first home depot was around 60,000square feet with about 25,000 sku’s. The biggest problem was they were still using the same technology in 2010 that they had in 1990’s (Home Depot, 2012). They need to update all their technology as it will let them use their employees in different ways then they are using them now. In the past, the P.O.S system has been separate from the inventory systems. The new operating systems are integrated and make keeping things in stock and ordering product much faster and accurate. This function helps keeps cost down in all aspects of the business. The fact that hardware and the software are going to be obsolete should be an important reason to upgrade the older systems. They can make my trip to the store quicker. The larger retailers like to change the set of the store and move stuff around thinking that it will sale better if it is not kept in the same place. Taking into account that product is moved in out of season and also Discontinued these types of things are understandable. They just need to keep the big ticket items in the same place so the customer does not have to look for them for too long or they may just leave and go to the other retailer were they know the product is. The one thing that would put them over the top would be price matching cause with the cost of gas if the customer knew they could get it at the same price as the other store they would just buy it

    Home Depot has direct rivals, such as Lowe’s Home Improvement, True Value and Menards; as well as many indirect rivals that are starting to branch into the home improvement category. This means that Home Depot is also competing with Supercenters like Wallmart. The two stores have a very different approach, however. The Home Depot stores are laid out like warehouses, with open metal shelving where potential customers can see product as far as the eye can see. All of the aisles are cleanly swept, wide and made of concrete so customers can push large flatbed carts around the store, easing access to larger items such as water heaters, storm doors or even bags of salt to keep snow off of driveways. Their aisles are also crawling with well trained, knowledgeable sales staff that are there solely to help you make the right decisions for what you what for your home. Walmart does not offer this feature, and they do not have stores designed to draw in contractors. Home Depot makes it easy for do-it-yourselfers and professional contractors to find everything they need within a few aisles. Walmart may be able to offer lower bottom-line prices on the home improvement items they sell, but they do not offer the same level of customer service or depth of product.     Home Depot enjoyed high growth of revenues and profits in the period 1978-2003. From 7 mio USD of revenues in 1979 to 64,8 bn in 2003. Revenue growth was generated mainly due to external growth coming from mergers and acquisitions. Home Depot has four product categories: Building and Remodeling, Home Décor and Organizing, Outdoor Living and Tool and Hardware. Company went through some structural changes when in 2000 first non funder Bob Nerdelli became the CEO of the company. Nerdelli previously worked for 27 years at General Electric and was known to be detailed oriented leader concerned with industrial cycles and archiving operational efficiency. After Nerdelli become CEO of Home Depot the company introduced several operational improvements like improved supply chain, self check out kiosk, introduction of advance IT technology, offering more services, etc. Even dough these improvements were well perceived by the customers and analysts the stock price fell to all-time low bottom 22 USD in year 2000. The operating margin and net profit margin were increasing during the years 2002-04, however, the revenue growth was below the expected revenue growth of 16% in the first quarter 2001 compared to the company 5-year annual average of 25%. The strategies chosen by Home Depot seem to have worked effectively till this day.
