There are around 68 million hogs throughout the United States. Almost all of those pigs are produced to be slaughtered and consumed. The show pig industry is a tiny fraction of that 68 million, but is growing bigger and stronger year after year. As some people see buying a single baby pig for thousands of dollars is quite crazy, I see it as a way of life. From studying genetics in order to breed the most superior pairs, to preparing a pig to go in the show ring, raising show pigs in a competitive manner is a practice that takes your best effort 365 days of the year. Many people may not understand my passion for walking a pig around with a dinky whip, but it is something that I could never sacrifice. My desire to raise and sell show pigs stems from early in my life.…

Farm pigs live outside or in hog confinement barns. They need to be waterproof and have good ventilation. Barn stalls need to have straw bedding that is clean and dry. Any soiled or wet bedding needs to be cleaned out and replaced every day. Farm pigs also need access to a pasture so they can root around. While outside, they need mud to roll around in. This is important because it protects their skin from getting sun burnt. Farm pigs are also usually raised to be slaughtered for their meat. However that is not the case for miniature pigs. This type of pig is kept inside the house as a pet. When they are young, they can be trained to go potty outside or in a litter box that is inside. In addition to that, you can teach them to walk on a leash. As they get older, it will be harder to teach them these things. Miniature pigs are not at all dirty because they are kept inside most of the time and can be given a bath a few times a year. You can take them to the vet if they get sick, for vaccinations, and for checkups. Despite all of their differences farm pigs and miniature pigs have a few similarities as…

Chism Heritage Farm stated that pigs “ efficiently convert a wide array of resources into a more bioavailable state” and “pig snouts, hooves and manure can be used to enhance the land, rather than degrade it.” Pigs will root up land with their noses providing a form a plowing while also fertilizing the ground with their manure. Reducing work for the farmer increases the farm operation as a whole. The pig roams freely and performs normal behavior while the farmer benefits from the porker’s actions. After a pig has served its purpose, Chism Heritage Farm says, “it’s time to go to market.” Farmers usually raise their own food, and who doesn’t love bacon for breakfast and ham for the holidays? Pigs play their roles on the farm while alive and squealing, and also while served on a silver platter with an apple stuffed in their mouth because pork has become “the most commonly consumed meat worldwide.” While these domestic pigs live on farms, wild hogs inhabit the woods.…
