HMS CHALLENGER JOURNAL
HMS Challenger Journal
Day 1 – December 23, 1872
Hello, journal! It is our first official day of this adventure I am about to take on the HMS Challenger. The weather isn’t to dandy today in England where we are leaving from, it’s a little rainy and cold, the worst mixture. But! We have to get a move on, I’m extremely excited to embark on this journey and I am honored to be a part of this history. I’m most excited and feel a sort of curiosity because we have such an abundant amount of useful technology. It’s beautiful! We have microscope, which is used to look extremely close into thing we find on the bottom of the ocean which is picked up by something called the bottom sampler. The bottom sampler is like a giant net that goes along the ocean floor picking up particles and specimens. Things like shells and small sea animals are dragged into the net.
Day 2 – May1, 1873
Right now, I and my mates are in the Nova Scotia Gulf Stream. And lucky us, we have the whole day off. We have been working exceptionally hard and diligently for months and I do believe this is well due ha-ha! I am going to spend my day off laughing and talking to my ship mates. We will probably go to the bay on the port and catch a brewie. Maybe some beautiful ladies will be there that we can get to talking with. We are ALL in dire need of that, especially since me and my wife’s divorce. Speaking of my family, I think after the bar with the guys I might go ahead and write a letter. And then after that I’m going to sit on the very edge of the ship and watch the sun set because there are not too many days that pass that are as beautiful as today. Then catch a good nights rest because we don’t too many of those around here!
Day 3 – September 9, 1873
I should really write in my journal more often. But anyways, I believe we are on the way to Brazil or somewhere in South America. The weather today is normal, very still and the clouds are out and it’s partially sunny. But today is not a

We have set out on our voyage in the blistering cold England weather. This is not the smoothest start for a hopeful wondrous adventure, but I have my homemade Weasel coffee to help me stay awake. Nonetheless, I have brought all the tools I possess. Today my team of scientists will use the Buchanan Water Sampler to test the carbonic acids in the water, but before we embark on this journey I have noticed that this vessel is remarkable. Yes my room is very small, but the laboratories are really modernized. As we set sail some of the many navigators were using the anemometer to test the winds so we do not get blown of course. As fascinating as my first voyage may be I could not be oblivious as to why I was chosen to be here. A couple hours into our mission the Captain, Wyville Thomas, ordered all of the chemists, physicists, and biologists to test their instruments to make sure everything was properly working. My team was ready to use the Buchanan Water Sampler. We opened both hatchets were the water will pour into. I put it into the ocean and after it was filled I quickly yet carefully closed it. Afterwards my team and I went down to the Carbonic Acid Analysis Apparatus. We plan to boil the water and then trap the evaporated gas that will be steamed into the air. The left over gases will be analyzed using chemical titration. Which result for us to better understand the properties of the ocean. I cannot wait until what tomorrow has in…

One of the tools would use aboard the HMS Challenger would be A dredge took samples along the surface of the seafloor while being dragged across the bottom. The Challenger dredges were between 3 and 5 feet in width and were just metal nets shaped into bags. A piece of tightly woven cloth in the bottom of the bag trapped small animals and samples of mud. The swabs, or "tangles," attached to the bottom of the dredge were standard Navy-issue mops that were very good at sweeping up smaller organisms.…

The ship set sail from Portsmouth, England early yesterday morning and we have been sailing for almost a whole 24 hours; I’m assuming we’re about 40 degrees north of the equator. It’s a perfect day out for sailing, the water is crystal blue, my hair is softly blowing though the wind, and there’s not a cloud in sight. Today my job was to use a dredge. A dredge takes samples along the surface of the seafloor while being dragged across the bottom. I didn’t have much luck today finding large organisms other than a few normal fish, but we did bring up some mud with insects living in it. The insects were tiny seemed to have been feeding on the mud. They looked to be worms with legs. Only much slimmer than worms…

I find that I am positive in most areas of my life but need to work on the honesty and finding ways to relieve stress to be more care free and not worry so much. I would need to find things that calm me down and I feel is relaxing. I also need to work on honesty with myself first. Once I can quite lying to myself then I can quite lying to others, which then I’m not having to cover a lie with another lie.…

Jay's Journal is an interesting book written by Jay. The story is about Jay and how he was led into witchcraft and the occult and using drugs by his girlfriend and others. The author tells how Jay was led into all of this, and it also tells how he got his two best friends into using the same stuff and into the occult also known as the O. The author describes how he learned that the human race was afraid of mind over matter techniques and learned how to use them himself. He was able to levitate small objects and see peoples auwa and aura. This is a great book because it helps some people that deal with the same problems to see what might happen if they choose to follow the same path. I really liked this book because it might help people deal with this type of stuff, it was written in a real person's journal and described what led to his death, and I like how it says what happened every day of his life.…

In my experience of an oceanography cruise, there was so much to see and learn all at once. Collecting data, recording data, and actively participating in using various objects to collect the data was very interesting. Nikon bottle, Refractometer, Secchi Disk, Plankton and Otter-Trawl, to name a view, were the various instruments we used to collect the data we need as the science crew. In analyzing the various aspect of the ocean, the Ponar was the most interesting object we used. It appeared to be this big heavy object that was thrown into the ocean and pulled back up and opened for review. However, that is only part of the description of a Ponar, it is more than just that and is very important in collecting ocean sediments.…

There are many poets out there that I enjoy reading. Heinrich Heine would have to be one of them. All of him poems are considered among the best in German literature. Not only do I consider his writings remarkable, he is thought this way by many. You can tell by his writings that his career is in the later Romantic Movement and the era of the socially and politically conscious movement. His writings as well as his exile from Germany demonstrates his lifelong search for personal and national identity. His back ground is definitely noticeable through his writings. His education background included training in both Hebrew and Jesuit schools. They say that his double disappointment in life was the theme for many of his early writings.…

Having been condemned, by nature and fortune, to active and restless life, in two months after my return, I again left my native country, and took shipping in the Downs, on the 20th day of June, 1702, in the Adventure, Captain John Nicholas, a Cornish man, commander, bound for Surat. We had a very prosperous gale, till we arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, where we landed for fresh water; but discovering a leak, we unshipped our goods and wintered there; for the captain falling sick of an ague, we could not leave the Cape till the end of March. We then set sail, and had a good voyage till we passed the Straits of Madagascar; but having got northward of that island, and to about five degrees south latitude, the winds, which in those seas are observed to blow a constant equal gale between the north and west, from the beginning of December to the beginning of May, on the 19th of April began to blow with much greater violence, and more westerly than usual, continuing so for twenty days together: during which time, we were driven a little to the east of the Molucca Islands, and about three degrees northward of the line, as our captain found by an observation he took the 2nd of May, at which time the wind ceased, and it was a perfect calm, whereat I was not a little rejoiced. But he, being a man well experienced in the navigation of those seas, bid us all prepare against a storm, which accordingly happened the day following: for the southern wind, called the southern monsoon, began to set in.…

Today is a big day for me and very exciting. This morning in partnership with my friends George and David, I left all that I had behind and joined the great migration, heading to West. We’re in the ship Natalia. We’ve sailed out of New York harbor. We are going to Ameria with confidence that we will be successful in excavation of gold and we will strike it rich. There are any kinds of people on the ship, from low class to higher; also, I think here may be criminals or pilferers. I think so because everyone who knows about the gold, which was discovered in Ameria, would want to become rich. For me it's like I won a lottery because it is free, so I can go there, dig the gold up, pay nothing, become rich and go back. Absolutely astonishing! Our way will take up to five months and I've already experienced a sea sickness. I don't have any idea about Ameria, but I hope the best.…
