Hitler was a bad man, right? Lots of Germans looked up to him as a leader though. Why? Hitler gained power without firing a single shot because people were desperate, they were afraid, and he denied Jewish rights. The first way Hitler rose to power was because people were desperate. People were desperate to get out of the Great Depression, which was terrible for Germany. They were also desperate to blame somebody or a group of people for their loss in the war and all of their current problems. Hitler blamed the Jews for signing the Treaty of Versailles, which made Germany lose lots of its land, accept the war guilt, and pay the war reparations. Because the people of Germany were desperate, they accepted the lie that the Jewish people had caused their loss and caused their depression. People were in denial that they had lost the war, but the Jews were also denied their basic rights. The Nuremberg laws outlawed many basic rights of the Jewish people while the Germans were fine with it because they didn't affect them. For example, Document 1, the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor, outlawed Jewish people marrying German people. “1. Marriages between Jews and citizens of German or kindred blood blood are forbidden. Marriages concluded in the defiance of this law are void, even if, for the purpose of evading this law, they were concluded abroad.” (Nuremberg Laws, 1935). These laws made the Jews living in Germany have little power and stopped them from doing basic things, such as going to school, or even sitting on the same bench as a non-jew. These laws show that the Jews were treated as subhuman and that they were below the normal German citizens. The Germans were happy to be treated as above all else, so this made them support Hitler
