Black athlete essay. As my athlete I picked Magic Johnson. He was born on august 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan. He had grown up with nine brothers and sisters and both of his parents had worked. He had a passion for basketball, and he would start practicing at his high school sometimes as early as 7:30am. He had earned his nick name “Magic” as a sports writer had witnessed him score 36 points 16 rebounds and 16 assists in a single game.
He went on to play in college for Michigan state university, and at this time he was an astonishing 6 feet 9 inches tall. He excelled during his freshman year, helping his team go into the Big Ten Conference title, and the following year he helped carry his team to the NCAA finals, in which he met his career rival Larry Bird. After college Johnson was drafted by Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. And in his first season he had earned the award of MVP for his efforts in leading the Lakers to victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1984 Johnson again gained his second NBA MVP title in the NBA finals.
In November 1991, Johnson retired from the Lakers after revealing that he had the AIDS virus, which he believed he contracted through unprotected sexual activity. The AIDS diagnosis was especially hard for Johnson. At the time he learned he had the disease, his wife Cookie was pregnant with their first child. Both his wife and son, Earvin III, turned out to not have HIV. But At the time, many people thought the virus mostly affected homosexuals or intravenous drug users. There was also a lot of fear and confusion regarding how the disease could be transmitted. Johnson's decision to go public with his medical condition helped raise awareness about the disease. He established the Magic Johnson Foundation to support HIV/AIDS research efforts and awareness programs that same
