Many factors lead to great tensions in Europe, sparking the need for a war. This war, otherwise know as 'The Great War', occurred in 1914 until 1918. The war was mainly fought between the members of the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) and the members of The Triple Entante (Great Britain, France, and Russia) countries such as the USA joined in. Tensions over territories, imperialism and arms race are all some of the causes that lead to the war. World War 1 was a time of struggle for Europe and the effects it had on the country and its people left many psychologically unstable.
Over time, countries throughout Europe made mutual defense agreements that would pull them into battle. If one country was attacked, allied countries were bound to defend them. Tensions over territories were a major cause for the war. What happened with WW1 was Austria-Hungary wanted territory in the Balkins but so did Serbia so Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia; Russia got involved to defend Serbia. Germany seeing Russia mobilizing, declared war on Russia. France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into war. Then Japan entered the war. Later, Italy and the United States would enter on the side of the allies. Another cause of war many believed was Imperialism, Countries such as the United Kingdom and France accumulated great wealth in the late 19th century through their control of trade in foreign resources, markets, territories, and people. Other countries, such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Russia all hoped to do so as well in economic advantage. Their frustrated ambitions created tensions, the limits of natural resources in many European nations began to slowly alter trade balance, and make national industries seek new territories rich in natural resources.
