In 1595 and 1845 summit eruptions melted snow and ice and produced mudflows that traveled tens of miles from the volcano, these mudflows were confined to the valleys that drain the volcano. The 1595 eruption sent a lahar sweeping down the valleys of the River Guali and the River Lagunillas, killing 636 people. In 1845, another immense lahar flooded the upper valley of the River Lagunillas, killing over 1000…

Covering over 85% of Hawaii, Mauna Loa meaning long mountain, is the earth's largest volcano. Located on the main island of Hawaii, Mauna Loa pushes 12 million cubic meters of lava into Hawaii each day. It rises over 4 km above sea level. But, below the sea, it drops another 5km to the sea floor which is then indented another 8km under the weight of this giant land form. This means the total height of this volcano is a whooping 17km high from the base of the volcano to the crest. It is amid the earth's most currently active volcanos with its most recent eruption in 1984 being both extremely beautiful and destructive. It has been documented erupting 33 times between 1843 and 1984 at 5-6 year intervals and scientists currently expect an eruption…

Volcanic eruptions can cause damage within hundreds of miles away. The volcano ash's causes airplane engines to fail, destroys crops, contaminates water, and damages electronics and machinery. When the ash touch's the ground, burying everything, sometimes even make's buildings to collapse. Mount St. Helen's produced more than 490 tons of ash that fell over some many miles. All volcanos are dangerous. They are all scattered all over the world and we don't know when they are going to blow. The three volcanos I picked were pretty interesting. The Pavlof is the most active and one of the most active in North America. The Cero Negro is not as big as the other to volcano's I picked. The Tungurahua is a very large and pretty cool looking volcano.…

Mount Yasur is an active volcano on Tana Island, Vanuatu with a height of 361 m above sea level, located on the coast near Sulphur Bay, that lies to the southeast of the taller mountain Tukosumera, which was active in the Plesistocene. It has a largely unvegetated pyroclastic cone with nearly a circular summit crater of 400 m in diameter. It is a stratovolcano caused by the eastward-moving Indo-Australian Plate being sub-ducted under the westward-moving Pacific plate. It has been erupting continuously for over 800 years, Mount Yasur can usually be approached safely. Its eruptions, which often occur several times an hour, are classified as Strombolian. the longitude and latitude of mt. yasur are 19.53° s, 169.442° e. Mount Yasur is a Cinder Cone, explosive volcano that in fact is placed along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and has been continuously erupting since 1774. However only 10 of these eruptions since Oct. 26 actually did some damage by effecting the weather or humans. When Yasur erupts often times what happens is Molten Rocks, Dust, Gas, Pyroclastic, Ash and most of all Lava shoots out. Mt Yasur was discovered by Captain James Cook, in 1774 he was out on his first European journey out to this island and apparently what attracted him was the firey glow of the explosion. Some interesting facts about Mt. Yasur is that it’s most active through late February and April during the wet season. A lot of rain means a higher groundwater level, possible allowing water to come into contact with hot rocks around the magma chamber. Three people have been killed over the years because they wandered to lower, unsafe areas. Mt Yasur has been called “the lighthouse of the pacific” because the more-or-less continuous Strombolian and volcanic activity since Cook’s first sighting. The…

What followed this development on the volcano was the largest measured pyroclastic flow in history, travelling at about 230mph - which occurred on March 27th, 1980. Had there been people at work on the volcano’s face or lower slopes there would have been little hope for them, these lives were saved by prior planning and prediction of the eruption resulting in the evacuation of the local area.…

The 'nuée ardente' volcanic cloud from Mount Pelée on Martinique in 1902 (see second link) killed an estimated 28,000 people in the town of St Pierre. Here there was a pyroclastic surge travelling at 130 metres / second at a temperature of between 200 & 500 degrees centigrade. This eruption was similar to the Vesuvius eruption that buried Pompei in 79AD but these types of eruptions are very…
