History of Microsoft
History of Microsoft

My research paper is going to be on whether or not Microsoft should be broken up by the Justice Department. In order to understand what is going on in the trial, you need to know the history of Microsoft. Without knowing the history of Microsoft, there would be no way of forming an accurate opinion of whether Microsoft should be broken up or not. Microsoft first came into existence in 1975 and was founded by William H. Gates III(Bill Gates) and Paul Allen. The first product that they produced was the first version of the BASIC programming language for the Altair, which was the first personal computer. Microsoft then licensed BASIC to other companies, such as Apple Computer, Commodore, and Tandy Corporation. In 1977, Microsoft released its second language product, Microsoft FORTRAN. Microsoft got its biggest break in 1980, when IBM chose Microsoft to write the operating system for the IBM PC personal computer. This was historically the biggest turning point for Microsoft. When the deal was made, Microsoft didn't yet have an operating system to sell to IBM. Microsoft then purchased an operating system from a Seattle programmer and renamed it MS-DOS(Microsoft Disk Operating System.) During the meeting with IBM, Bill Gates was very crafty and convinced IBM to let Microsoft license MS-DOS to other computer manufacturers. That is why there are many clones of the IBM PC today. That move made MS-DOS the standard operating system for personal computers and skyrocketed Microsoft's growth. In 1984, Microsoft became on of the first established software companies to develop software for the Apple Macintosh. By that time Microsoft had an office suite of applications that included Word, Excel, and Works. That move gave Microsoft experience in developing applications for GUI's(Graphical User Interface.) In 1985, Microsoft used that knowledge and release the first version of Windows. Windows was a shell of DOS, which means that it ran

It seems relevant to have to explain the dominance and superiority of Microsoft, as it lies as Mac's biggest competitor since day one of its involvement into the computer industry. Starting of initially in 1975, Microsoft had a significant head start of 9 years into the development process of manufacturing their products. It is evident to this day that the 9 years would remain the gap that has allowed Microsoft to become one of the most successful global companies to exist in the history of mankind. However from the 9 year gap, Macintosh was given an insight on the basis of computer hardware and software processing, which has allowed it to manipulate and occupy certain markets that, without its dedication to the specialized software delivered by Macintosh, would see it to have collapsed years previous to today. The most recognizable products supplied worldwide by Microsoft is the Windows operating system, upholding generic use and…

Microsoft had a lot to live up to after supporting an operating system called Windows XP. Windows XP was widely used by everyone from school kids, to multi-million dollar corporations. Microsoft seemed to be under a lot of pressure to create a GUI that was as “user friendly” as the Mac, handle crashes better than XP, and made better use of memory. Their answer: Windows Vista. Quickly seeing their failure, the answer was to get something out that would “fix” their place in the market. Their answer (and the right one): Windows 7.…

Bill Gates from a young age had always been into computers since a young age. He attended school in Harvard, but later dropped out to start his own software company, showing his entrepreneur spirit. During the first five years of Microsoft, although he helped write codes with the software he also oversaw the business side of the company. Bill Gates was already running a successful company, with a successful product even with limited business experience. In 1979 hired Steve Smith to be his first business manager of the company. Smith said “I was amazed at how successful they were without what appeared to be any real business management” (Erickson and Wallace 148). That is a testament to how Bill Gates changed business by focusing more on the performance of the product, instead of how to market it. Microsoft started off as a product known as BASIC, which was programming language for early computers. With Bill’s entrepreneurial and innovative spirit he didn’t stop there however, in 1985 Microsoft released its first ever operating system, known as Microsoft Windows 1.0. After the small success of Windows 1.0, Gates was able to form a partnership with a bigger technology company at the time, IBM, to help make an operating system for their computers known as O/S 2. Not long after this product, Microsoft decided to expand and made office productivity products known as Microsoft Office, which was also very well selling and a testament to Bill Gates entrepreneurship. He continued working on the Microsoft Windows operating system, and in 1990 Microsoft Windows 3.0…

Microsoft had a big break in 1980 when the company IBM came up to them for a new operating system for all of the new computers. Microsoft became one of the main software manufacturing companies, just as the market for personal computers started to rise. This is what Gates had been predicting what would happen, that every home would have a computer per household. Since Microsoft had no competitions with any other company when it first launched, no one has come near to over running Microsoft. Microsoft released the first version of Windows in 1990. This was a huge breakthrough for Microsoft. This software had graphical interfaces instead of text interfaces. This…
