1) Do you think Augustus restored the Roman Republic? Explain why or why not.
Through his unique political and military powers, Augustus successfully jumped at the opportunity to restore the Roman Republic by further expanding and reconstructing the basis of it. 2) What is a “constitutional monarchy”?
Constitutional monarchy is a form of government in which a king or queen acts as Head of
State.
3) According to the reading what was the main source of Augustus’s power?
The main source of Augustus's power was his position as commander of the Roman Army. 4) What did the term “barbarian” mean to a Roman? What is the origin of that word?
Romans referred to traders who frequented the conquered frontier and trafficed with the native people, as barbarians. "Barbarians" was derived from a Greek word for people who didn't speak Greek. 5) Why do you think the Pax Romana allowed for a literary boom in Rome between 17BCE and 17 CE?
I think the Pax Romana allowed for the literary boom as a result of the Augustan settlement's gift of peace. 6) Who were the Muses? What was their function?
The muses were Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in those subjects. 7) Who is Dante and why is he associated with Virgil? (This is a question you will have to look up on the Internet. Or ask Dr Evers...she will be happy to tell you the answer!!)

In the fifth and fourth centuries Rome’s tyrannical rule was defeated, and an aristocracy of patricians became the ruling class. The common people, the plebeians, had been weakened in society after the King’s defeat, but to meet the demands of the people, Tribunes were put into power as the heads of the plebeians. Up until this point, the “task of maintaining a body of law was met through oral traditions”, but the tribunes “demanded that laws should be reduced to writing and made public”.
