Hispanic Family Influence
Being the oldest first-generation child of a Hispanic family has had the greatest influence in my education. When my parents immigrated to the US, they did not know English and had only received primary education. As a result, I had no one at home that could help with my school work. Although learning English was difficult, I knew it had to be learned fast so I would not fall behind in school and become the translator my parents desperately needed. Even at a young age, I knew education was essential. Furthermore, my family constantly faced economic difficulties due to poverty. To provide enough for our family, my father worked two jobs and was rarely at home. I helped my mother by doing many chores and aiding my four siblings. When I began …show more content…
Aware of the economic struggles my parents faced, I decided to work and pay for all of my expenses. Every summer, since I was twelve, I decided to work alongside my parents harvesting cherries. Cherry harvest consisted of carrying buckets that weighed twenty-five pounds up steep hills and tall ladders for seven hours a day. It was the hardest physical activity I had ever done. Being such an exhausting job, I expected it to yield immense benefits. It did not, as my parents had done this job every summer and could barely provide our basic necessities. The wages they earned were never enough to buy a home or secure a savings account. Every major event in my life has shaped who I am, particularly, how I approach my academics. Helping my family has made me selfless. I strive to help others first, whenever possible. Balancing family and school work has made me a reliable person who always perseveres. Working with my parents has allowed me to value, appreciate and take advantage of every educational opportunity. Acquiring an education is critical to me because it gives value to all of my parents’ hard work. I have learned that everything should be done with compassion and no obstacle is

I was raised in a Mexican-American home. My parents had my older sister when soon after they graduated high school, so they struggled to provide the economic needs for my older sister’s heart surgeries when she was an adolescent. Because of these conflicts in their life they continued pursuing higher education while allowing my grandmother to look after my sister. They eventually started dedicating their lives to more work than play; therefore, that lead to me and my siblings to raised by my grandmother. Moreover, I grew up living in my grandmother’s house chasing chickens and being forced to eat everything on my plate. My cousins were in the same situation, and we were all around the same age. That lead us to spend everyday together, making…

I can still remember countless nights sitting with my parents at the dining room table long past my scheduled bedtime, trying to understand my homework. As a middle child and the only girl in my family, I would always look at my brothers with jealously. They always seemed to quickly understand their school work, effortlessly complete homework and obtain impeccable scores on tests. I always felt that I needed to study harder, study longer and struggle to grasp concepts that seemed easy for others to understand. Although I did not see the positive in this situation at the time, as I have aged, attended college, and established my career as a successful Radiologic Technologist and Clinical Manager, I realize my past experiences and struggles shaped me into the…

Financial despair is undeniably a difficult burden on a parent. Indeed, such a desperate condition may push a parent to force or encourage their young child to work because of the perceived benefit from the additional income provided by the child’s labor. However, that choice is exploitative and can be hurtful to a young child. A young child who is forced to work may forego going to school for instance. The perceived benefit from the extra income will never compensate for the lack of learning and social adaptation gained from the school environment. Such a child could grow up to be an illiterate and asocial adult because of a decision made by someone else even if it is his or her parents.…

In today's competitive world, many families find it necessary for both parents to go out to work. While some say that the children in these families benefit from the additional income, others feel they lack support because of their parents' absence due to working constant hours at the office, shop, store, etc. Today’s economic situation forces both parents to go out and work in order to properly provide for their family. With both mother and father working, some children tend to find themselves feeling forgotten or overlooked. In this essay I will describe how having both parents working can be beneficial for the children in the family not only economically, but mentally and socially.…
