Final Exam, HIS 315K, Fall 2010, Seaholm

Instructions:
• The exam for HIS 315K-39070 (MWF 10-11) is scheduled for Wednesday, 12/8, 2-5 pm in Hogg Memorial Auditorium.
• The exam for HIS 315K-39075 (MWF 1-2) is scheduled for Tuesday, 12/14, 9 am – 12 noon, in the UTC classroom.
• Bring a new, unmarked bluebook and a pen or pencil to the exam.
• The exam is closed book/closed note.
• The final exam will count as 30% of your course grade.

Exam Format: There will be one essay question on the exam. The one essay question will be one of the following questions.

1. The 1810s through the early 1840s was a “revolutionary” time in the United States: the Market Revolution, a democratic political revolution, and the industrial revolution. Write an essay about these developments and how they changed American society. Your essay should explain what each “revolution” was and the causes and consequences of each revolution. Your essay should explain ways that these revolutions were interdependent. For example, you should explain how the Market Revolution facilitated the industrial revolution and how the industrial revolution encouraged the Market Revolution. Finally, your essay should explain how these revolutions changed American society: families, gender roles, how people “made a living,” class structure, a new ethic of individualism for the middle class.

2. What does Harriet Beecher Stowe tell us in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, her best-selling novel published in 1852, about the United States of America at that time? Specifically, how does Mrs. Stowe present slavery in the South? How does she present the attitude of many white northerners regarding slavery in the South? What is her indictment of slavery? Why does she believe that slavery is wrong and has no place in a republic? How does she seek to demonstrate that slavery is wrong?
