    1. After years of polite submission to her male counterparts, Janie gains her voice in Chapters 7 and 8. Prior to her defiance of Joe, Janie observes the way Daisy, Mrs. Bogle, and Mrs. Robbins are treated by the men. These three Eatonville women provide caricatures—quick, stereotyped sketches—of what it means to be a black woman in this small Florida town. In what ways do these caricatures highlight a larger disrespect toward women? How do they show Janie’s increasing difficulty with the way men judge women?…

Under the British rule, Tamils held the powerful jobs in the government service because of their good command of English. However based on the 1956 Official Language Act, only Sinhala was used as the language of administration. The Tamils held a peaceful demonstration which was however disrupted by the supporters of Sinhala language. Since 1957, the government granted greater recognition to the Tamil language by declaring it as a national language, language of administration in the northern and southern provinces. This upset the Tamils as they are unable to secure their jobs or to be promoted. This also concluded that peaceful means might not work and violence may be the answer to the problem.…

I interviewed an individual that practiced Indian culture. Before interviewing this person I had some preconceived ideas about the Indian culture. I assumed that all Indian women were to dress completely covered with only their eyes showing. I believed that India was a poor country and most of the people who practiced the Indian culture were also poor. Another preconceived thought I had was that mostly all people who were Indian only spoke Hindi, with only a few knowing english. However I learned quickly from the person I interview that not all of these were true. She explained how women do dress more conservative however they can show more then just their eyes. While interviewing her she wore a saris however her entire face was exposed. She also explained how while in India, most of the population speak Hindi however, most that moved to america speak english.…
