Hilton Hotels: Building Sustainability with a greener world.

STREAM 1 - GROUP 4

Date: - 29.11.2010

Executive Summary
The report examines sustainability in hotel industry, as how important it has become, for a firm or organisation to become environmentally sustainable in today’s world. After global warming, everyone has become more cautious about environment, more organisations have realised responsibility towards environment. Since, hotel industry and tourism industry are inter-linked, which serve consumers viz. Service industry i.e. where one succeeds and fail based on customer satisfaction. It becomes important to cater to customers who are more environmentally conscious than ever. Sustainability has become topic of interest even at Government level, so it becomes obvious for every international organisation to be responsible.
The study is based on how Hilton Chain, one of the biggest players in their industry introduced Environment Sustainability programmes in their hotels across continents. The programmes helped Hilton save millions of dollars and reduction in energy and water usage and carbon output. The programmes introduced in Hilton – USA was “Lightstay” and in Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific was “We Care”. This report examines, implementation of this programmes, the profits Hilton chain earn from this programmes, shortcomings of this programmes etc.
The purpose of this report is to create sense of responsibilities, about environment, among ourselves, because this would not only help our planet but also our descendants. At the same time, saving energy presents a fantastic opportunity to cut costs – and increase profitability – in a highly competitive market.
This combination provides a strong business case, and one that has encouraged Hilton to invest significant time and money in energy management.

Today, nearly 95 percent of the Juma rainforest remains intact. As Marriott International expands our global portfolio, we are creating a world of opportunity for our associates, customers, owners and franchisees, business alliances and communities. At the same time, our business model remains grounded in a set of core values: put people first, pursue excellence, embrace change, act with integrity and serve our world. We’ve seen some big changes at Marriott® recently, including our new appointments — with Arne being named president and CEO and Bill becoming executive chairman; the reorganization of our lodging group into a continental structure that drives better operating results and growth; and the spin-off of our timeshare business resulting in two strong companies with solid core businesses. Throughout these changes, we have remained steadfast in our focus on sustainability innovation and action that fuel the way we conduct business and how we approach our responsibility to the planet and society. This report discloses the progress we’ve made toward our sustainability goals over the past two years. And it highlights how we are teaming up with diverse stakeholders — suppliers, governments, nongovernmental organizations, universities and even our competitors — to find long-term solutions to some of society’s most critical challenges.…

There are many stakeholders in this case. Michael Pace, Kimpton Hotel's West Cost Director of Operations and Environmental Programs, General Manager of another hotel in San Francisco and the main catalyst for implementing its EarthCare program. Kimpton Hotels, its board of directors, consumers, Tom LaTour, and Mike Dapatie were also directly involved and affected in this case. The benefits of Kimpton's environmental sustainability initiatives were bottom line savings. In addition to that there was the potential to generate new businesses. The costs were high and were really the only major issue with the program. Opportunities for reducing a hotel's environmental impact were plentiful. Things like reducing the laundering of linen to customer discretion saved so much that it spread to luxury hotels everywhere. Despite all this potential, environmental progress in the U.S. hotel industry was limited. Only a few were fully committed to it. Most hotels were not doing anything beyond the small things.…

The future of tree house hotels is in the process of becoming even more and more successful. In April 2006, a team of trained individuals put together their thoughts and ideas for a more efficient tree house hotel not only to help the environment, but as well as people and their stay at the hotel. In The Telegraph Newspaper, an article titled “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” described the uprising tree house hotels as “the timber-framed, 4-story Sigma house, designed by architects PTP and built by the Stewart Milne Group, which has been awarded 5 stars” (Eccleston, 2007). The Stewart Milne Group has been working constantly on this project to make the future of the tree house hotels very successful, and by 2012 these hotels well be making their way to a more eco-friendly environment and saving more money. According to the design team, they have already considered many ways to help enhance the facility and better the water and supply system, as well as the energy efficiency that is being used. As stated in the article from The Telegraph Newspaper, “living tree houses would eliminate wasted energy used in harvesting wood for lumber, hauling and cutting lumber, and they would be carbon neutral” (Eccleston, 2007). Their main focus to improve these hotels is to eliminate wasted energy and make them carbon-free. Also included in the article “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” are a few of the future designs of these tree house hotels, which are described as follows: “100% renewable energy heating hot water from solar thermal panels and by generating electricity from roof mounted turbines and photovoltaic panels, a ‘grey water’ recycling system from bath, shower and basins for use in flushing toilets and rainwater collection on the roof, all timber from sustainable sources and the design and construction delivering a claimed 100% reduction in CO2 emissions over standard building regulations, a heat sensor that opens and closes even temperature flow, air…

In the 1970’s, most hoteliers weren’t concerned with environmental conservation or social enhancement programs. The catalyst for change in these attitudes began with a major energy crisis in the United States during the 1970’s which drove up energy prices and limited the spending capabilities of consumers and business owners alike. Due in large part to the limited supply of energy, the hotel industry began employing programs and techniques to reduce their overall energy usage. Though these programs were employed mainly to maintain profitability, they represent the beginning of a significant change in the way hotels are operated to this day. Hoteliers pushed for greater energy efficiency in the interest of cost reduction throughout the 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the early 1990’s that the industry began taking true green initiatives. After the United Nations issued a report on industrial sustainability the hotel industry began deploying their first Corporate Social Responsibility programs focusing on protecting and conserving the environment. In the 2000’s programs that focused on social issues were incorporated into Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives throughout the hotel industry. These programs emphasized the need to help people live better lives by providing education, medical care, and jobs to disenfranchised people across the globe.…
