While waiting in the shade at a table outside the building, the two discuss what they will have to drink. The man points out that it is hot and suggests they order beer. The woman responds and says that it is alright and the girl orders them with water. The girl points out that the drinks taste like licorice and begins arguing with the man and both agree that they just want a peaceful time. The girl then turns her attention back to the hills of which she said resembled elephants. After the man says her statement was not very bright, she explains she did not really mean they look like elephants, just the color of them. The man then brings up an operation that he wants Jig to get and tries to talk Jig into by passing it off as not being a big deal. Jig asks what will happen after the operation and the man says that the operation will fix all their problems and things will return to normal. He even explains that he knows people who have had the operation whose problems have been resolved. The man emphasizes that he loves her and he wants the best for her. The girl is still reluctant, but agrees when the man explains that it is the best course of action to take. Although most of the features of "Hills Like White Elephants" have been well discussed and understood, so that Paul Smith, in his 1989 survey of opinion on the story, can wonder if there is anything left to say about it (209), what has not been satisfactorily resolved is the question of the ending. In view of the fact that Hemingway leaves virtually everything, even what is at issue between the girl and the American, for the reader to "figure" out, meanwhile unobtrusively supplying what is needed to understand the story's structure and conflict, it seems logical to assume that he also expected the reader to be able to answer the question left by the story's ending: What are the couple going to do about the girl's pregnancy? Yet the ending…

n Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants, set in Barcelona, Spain, a conversation takes place between two lovers sitting outside of a bar. Hemingway’s writing style is very minimalist, and so it is up to the reader to decipher what message, tone, or imagery is being conveyed. In this short story it is a hot day, there are train tracks nearby. The hot weather could have symbolized the tension between the woman, called Jig, and the American man- the train tracks their differing viewpoints. The story begins with the woman asking the man what he would like to drink, to which he replies, “It’s pretty hot.”…

Over the years short stories have become popular for readers to be able to read and connect with the story that isn’t drawn out. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” (Oates, 1966) and “Hills Like White Elephants, (Hemingway, 1927)”. Both of these short stories tell about decisions that have to be made through different conflicts and really just making decisions for what is best for oneself.…

The story is about a girl who married a man because he was a good fisherman, had his own house and was ready to take her parents in when they would get old. The man had a belief that two people should never say the word love before they have eaten a sack of flour together, which is why this story is named “Bread”. On the night they married, they had sex, but she got a bit sick, went outside and vomited over the fence. That’s when the man realized and told her that this happens when you have sex the first time. She got pregnant right away, and he left for Labrador. She used to spend her time gardening and watching her belly swell. He didn’t return from Labrador until September, just weeks before she gave birth to a pre-mature baby. They called home the minister for baptism the very next day and named him Angus Maclean, but he died in a week and they buried him in the graveyard in the Burnt Woods. The woman shared the grief with her husband and started loving her; she was pregnant again by November. She baked a loaf of bread for her husband, placed it on his plate, and tells him that this was the last bag of flour. He doesn’t reply for a minute and finally says he will pick up another today which shows even the man has started loving the woman too and wants to continue with the…

My overall opinion of the story is that it was a very interesting piece on racial inequality, economic oppression, and naturalism. The main character Dave faces all some of the issues stated and deals with them in his own way. He felt powerless in his life, where as an indentured servant working in the fields, he had to be ridiculed by not only his master, but other people and his own parents. He buys a gun to be manlier and have more control over the people round him. This is a power he isn’t ready for and he ends up “accidently” shooting one of the mules. In a sense this mule is himself, as he mentions once in the story, so in a way I feel as though he meant to do that. He ends up being forced to take on more responsibility, but ultimately…

Another story, “Hills Like White Elephants,” shows us the significance of the setting. The story is set in Spain at a train station to concern a decision in a relationship between the American man and the girl. The station is not their final destination, but they must decide where to go, whether they will go together and continue in their relationship or just break up and go in separate ways. The story explains the hills and the whole place as:…

Throughout his work “Hills Like White Elephants,” Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism and condensed metaphors to sensationalize the power, yet subtleness of the main theme: happiness. While the title does not blatantly represent the characters pursuit of happiness, the simile used in the title does epitomize Hemingway’s writing style as well as the diverse use of symbolism throughout the narrative. Hemingway uses this symbolism to convey the unspoken thoughts and emotions of the characters and the ultimate decision made to begin her journey on the pursuit of happiness.…
