“The Hiking Trip” Analysis

In the short story “The Hiking Trip,” the protagonist, Jeff, has to leave the canyon without his dad, in order to find help for his injured brother, Mark. Jeff is courageous and loving, and his true self is shown by his actions throughout the story. By the end Jeff finds his strength, he finds that love can give you courage.

In the beginning, Jeff acts childish and frightened. For example, he says,”I never wanted to come on this stupid old hiking trip!” This shows that he is immature because he is complaining about the trip while Mark is badly injured and in need of assistance. “Im scared! I don’t want to have courage!” Jeff is too frightened and he doesn't want to hike alone. He is too scared to come out of his comfort zone and go on the journey by himself.

Moments after, Jeff learned that he had to try his best to save Mark, he had to be strong and courageous. His father told him,”If not courage...have enough love for you brother…” Jeff replies with,”What was the name of the of that little town?” Jeff finally found his courage, thanks to all the love he has for Mark. He finally made up his mind to try his best to save Mark. “Can't stop Mark is in trouble!” When he finally made it out of the canyon he got tired and wanted to rest but he continued because he knew how important it was for Mark to get help. Finally, as Jeffs makes it out of the canyon he tries to find a quick way to get to the little town and find help for Mark. He started walking, then jogging, then running at his full capacity and thankfully a tow truck passes by and the driver tells Jeff to get in. Instead of slowing down
Jeff pushed himself beyond human endurance and was able to find someone to help him. While
Jeff and Bob, the tow truck driver, are in the car Jeff tells Bob about Marks situation and then moments later he passes out. Jeff was trying so hard that his body couldn't handle anymore, so when he finally found help for Mark, his body wanted to rest. “You’re a hero Jeff, you saved
Marks life!” are the words Jeff hears from his father when he wakes up. Jeff accomplished his journey and became a courageous and strong young man.

Jeff had to go through this journey by himself to help save Mark. He started off being childish and frightened and by the end he was strong, courageous and a hero. Jeff figured out that love can conquer your fears and give you strength and courage.

Individuals choose not to go on adventures due to the fact they have witnessed, experienced, or sometimes even had that gut feeling of fear of the unknown. In the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce and in the poem “Sadie and Maud” by Gwendolyn Brooks, fear of the unknown and life’s happenings ruined certain individual’s life altering adventure. My own experience as a young adult immediately succeeding high school, debating on whether or not to move away for college has taught me that life is too short to turn down an adventure. Even if I am afraid of the unknown, I’d rather suffer the consequences than to regret my prior decisions for the rest of my life.…

Along the eastern United States runs a trail inching along from Georgia to Maine; this trail is known as the Appalachian Trail. It stretches for an amazing 2,184.2 miles from Springer Mtn., GA all the way to Katahdin, Maine. There are three types of hikers that attempt this life changing walkabout: the section hiker takes the trail and divides it up in sections to hike at separate times; the flip-flop hiker does sections of the trail in different places to avoid weather and crowds; the thru-hiker tries to tackle the entire trail in one go. Typically it takes a thru-hiker an average of about 4 to 6 months to complete the trail and that is going 18 to 20 miles a day. Each year there are “thousands of hikers attempting…
