2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Essay My name is Emily Berger and I’m a high school senior that will be attending college in the fall of 2014. I have chosen to pursue a career in the field of physical therapy because of my experience with a volunteer position. This past summer I volunteered in the Advanced Physical Therapy Clinic at Dr. Manoogian and Dr. Guru’s office in Mount Dora, Florida to make sure physical therapy was the field for me. I did not want to worry about wasting a lot of money towards a college degree if it wasn’t a career I could see myself enjoying for the rest of my life. My mom inspired me to do my volunteer work. We both agreed that it would be a good idea to get experience in the physical therapy field before I go to college. We made a phone call to the office and they said it would be a pleasure to have a volunteer in the clinic. The week that school got out for the year of 2013, I began to work in the clinic right away. I am grateful to my mom for motivating me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new because I have discovered great things along the way. A lot of effort was required to do my volunteer work. The clinic is very busy so I always have to be on my feet. I volunteered from 8AM-5PM, Monday through Friday. The mornings mainly consisted of filing away the therapist’s notes into the patient’s files. After the filing was done, I would “shadow” behind the therapists and assist them with various tasks. I retrieved hot and cold packs for patients by retrieving them out of the clinic’s back room and putting them on the patient’s injuries, then returning the packs once the timers went off. I cleaned the beds once the patients were finished with treatment by spraying them with a disinfecting cleaner and wiping them down to keep the area hygienic. I showed patients how to perform their basic exercises to improve better ranges of motion for whatever condition they had by doing it with them. For example,

I did not really know what we would be doing until I arrived at the hospital and their community service coordinator was talking to us. We spent time collecting donations and using some of the money Psi Otes had in their funds, to go buy coloring books, crayons, and various other little toys to put together a fun little package for children who are receiving painful and extensive treatments. This was very touching because the coordinator expressed how much this meant to the doctors and the children that we were putting in some of our time to help others. She was so happy that she started to cry and this made me feel really good about myself and very much appreciated. After this event and knowing how much my volunteering helped them made me want to continue to help Riley’s Children’s Hospital.…

Last summer, as part of my high school graduation project, I volunteered at Saunders House nursing home. I choose this experience because it was something that I had never done before and I wanted to lend a helping hand. When I first came up with the idea of volunteering at a nursing home, I wanted to help out with activities and meet with some of the residents. At first it was challenging because I was extremely shy; however after getting to know the residents a little better, I started to feel more comfortable around them. My goal in volunteering was to bring a smile to the residents by doing different activities from word games, to playing chess, I feel like I accomplished that goal.…

I volunteered at Stephens School here in town. I chose this place because I love kids and I was willing to sacrifice some time to help my community and others. I had a lot of fun working with my friend Ana. My experience in helping Mrs. Burcham was very fun. I completed twenty hours. I really enjoyed helping her in cutting laminated papers, which taught me some patients, because we cut a lot of them. The most challenging part was being able to keep up with all the assignments that she would give us. When we did not have enough time to finish our work in Mrs. Burcham’s classroom, then she would give us papers to take home because there was so many. It usually took me around four to five hours to finish cutting all the papers she wanted us to cut for her. When she would give us homework for the day I would try my best to finish it, and turn it in as soon as possible. She…

I had the pleasure of shadowing a physical therapist in a home health setting treating children under the age of three. At first what initially looked like playing with the kids turned out to be much harder when I tried emulating what the therapist did. Throughout my senior year and even more now as a graduate, I realize I'm still constantly learning. I desire to continue to observe different settings as well as retake a class in order to prepare myself for school. Beyond shadowing I jumped on an opportunity to work side-by-side therapists. I took a position as a rehab aide at an outpatient clinic and enjoy seeing all I’ve learned so far being applied every day. I have absorbed knowledge of different protocols, handing practices, and front office operations. I relished being a part of the treatment process as well as the everyday tasks involved in running a clinic. It opened my eyes to better see the depth and breadth of the world of physical…

I was a junior in high school during basketball season with no plans for college. It was the fourth game of the season with eight seconds to go in the fourth quarter, when I cut down the middle to go up for a shot and ended up on the ground from a player striking the side of my knee. After three trainers and two doctors looked at my knee I got news back that it was an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, meaning surgery and that I was done with sports until my senior year. After surgery, I had a weekend of rest then started physical therapy. I attended physical therapy three times a week for two hours as well as doing at home exercises. I enjoyed seeing all that a therapist does and how they help people get back to where they were before. I was incredibly grateful for all they did for me getting me ready in time for summer volleyball for my senior year. I started to research all about a Physical Therapist and came across Physical Therapy Assistant, which I found more interesting mainly because it was less schooling. I had decided this is what I wanted to do and go to college for. Once senior year started, I did an internship with the facility I had gone to for therapy. I loved the environment and how the workers all communicated and got along. Getting to help people every day get their range of motion back and watching all the progress they make over the weeks was inspiring and that is what I wanted to see every day in my…
