Hight Street Observation
I decided to observe my local High Street in Mansfield Woodhouse, for its the main shopping road in what is known as our village.

On City Road there are numerous shops that cater for other ethnic members of the community, my local Hight Street doesn't as we have no such shops but we do have members of the community that would benefit from this service. We don't have as many takeaways on our street to choose from that is one big difference we see with City Road. But we do have similar things for example Colin the Newsagent (Making Social lives DVD, The Open University, 2009). We have lost 1 local newsagent due to a large supermarket moving into the area but one did serve this change. Some places last longer then others with the change in the age range of the community changing more so at the moment, as more and more young families move into the area. We have a few small family run businesses that have served over the yours changing hands for generations just like Colin the Newsagent (Making Social lives DVD, The Open University, 2009) and B&R Motors (Making Social lives DVD, The Open University, 2009).

The main differences between City Road and my local Hight street is the volume of traffic by vehicles as unless they are going from one end to the other or following the road round to the main car-park most people walk, so even though the High Street is the main road in the village it is no where near as busy as City Road so we have fewer traffic lights and predestination crossing paths. We also don't have so many bollards on the

There are a variety of people at these stops from business men in suits, women with children. There are young and old from all nationalities. Some are wearing clothing specific to their culture, some in old worn clothing, and some in trendy skinny jeans and heels. There is a fire and police station. The local library is nestled in a strip-mall. Several Urgent Care centers as well as alternative medicine facilities are dotted along the street. A plasma donation center is next to an unemployment agency and the parking lot is almost full.…

City Road in Cardiff is a busy consumer-driven street dominated by restaurants, takeaways and shops selling a variety of items from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. In this essay I will be looking at how these retailers favour some groups of consumers they cater for, the younger female population for instance and exclude other members of the population, along with how the infrastructure on the road and pavements makes life easier for some groups of people and potentially hinders others.…

Redevelopment of urban centres have been a result of recent trends in retailing, Since the 1970s there has been a phenomenon known as decentralization occurring in relation to retail. Decentralization is ‘the movement of people and employment from large dominant centres to a more dispersed pattern of locations’, in result of this it introduced large shopping centres in the 1980’s, this has occurred through the increased car ownership and transport links which has made it easier to visit other places. In addition to this, trends in retailing has also adjusted as more families have a higher disposable income and have more leisure time to actually have day trips to out of town centres. However, as result of this, this has led to a decline in towns and local communities as Out of town shopping centres are becoming more attractive as they are more convenient as all shops are under one roof. A further, and more recent development is the advent of ‘e-commerce’ which has occurred since the late 1990s and boomed in the mid-2000s. This has allowed many stores to slash overheads by removing themselves from the high-street while developing a strong online presence. Instead of having stores, they now only need warehouse depots to store goods whilst they are sold online. An example of a town centre, which had to adjust to recent trends in retailing such as out of town shopping centre, is Touchwood, Birmingham as to when Merry Hill (out of town shopping centre) was built, it resulted in decline in the town centre. Merry Hill was built in 1984-89 providing a 2 levels of shopping with an average of 21 million customers each year, the result on surrounding areas included abandoned town centres, downturn in local trade and environment. However, in 2001 Touchwood, Solihul was built to attract the locals back into the local community to…

City Road is home to many people of different gender, class, age, sexuality and race or ethnicities and different business types. It is these different business types that attract people for different reasons, for example Janet Symmons’ Xquisite Africa shop has been specifically designed to attract those of African ethnicity who may feel excluded from other shops on city road and want a place where they can purchase items from their native country (The Open University, 2014). In ‘The Life and Times of the Street: Part 1’, the Mackintosh centre which is now a sports club has an upper class history, the building makes it look expensive and exclusive, even though it tries to be inclusive to all in the community. This perception of it being expensive and a member’s only type establishment is why people feel they don’t belong at the Mackintosh centre.…

Hilltown is in a local area of out-migration because it is in a relatively remote area of NI (rural / upland / far from large cities; N.B. there are some commuters to Newry and Banbridge). Local wages are low (10% below national average), and industry is dominated by the primary and secondary sectors. Also, young couples have left the area because they have been ‘priced out’ of the housing market by affluent ‘outsiders’ buying holiday homes in the picturesque landscape. In response to this loss of population, there is some resentment between locals and holiday homeowners, and a decline in service provision. Negative changes include the downgrading of the post office to a post box, and the diversion of pension services to banks. Traditional village stores have been amalgamated into single chain convenience stores, and demographic ageing has resulted in low primary school numbers. Small schools are forced to ‘share’ teachers. With increasing car ownership, many bus routes have been cancelled, further isolating socially deprived members of the community. Some positive changes have occurred in that mobile library vans offer an internet service and chemists have diversified to include some simple medical / dental procedures.…
