High School and Respect
Children all around the world are guided daily by different mottos. On sport teams, mottos can be, “No pain, no gain.” At health clinics, it could be, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” No matter what a motto refers to, they all share one similarity. Mottos teach and inspire us to do something meaningful and helpful. A motto repeated here at John F. Kennedy High School is, “Respect is the key to success.” This idea shapes the lives of students and staff every school year. I strongly believe that respect is the key to life. If you cannot respect who you are, how can you possibly get others to respect you as well? A well-developed life can never be established if you are constantly disrespected and push around. What happens when people don’t respect others? In school, disrespecting your peers creates an uncomfortable learning environment. Being uncomfortable can distract students from learning to their full ability. Grades will suffer and when students are old enough to apply to college, they will have little success. Respect creates order in the world. Without it, many suffer. For example, in sports it is mandatory to have respect between players. I am involved in a volleyball program. If the players do not respect each other, we cannot use teamwork and make the plays we need to be successful. Without it, we cannot achieve the results we strive for. By simply using respect every day, you can be successful in whatever life you dream of. I believe there is respect at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. In most classes I have had this year, students raise their hands instead of calling out. Teachers additionally respect students problems and assist us in helpful ways. They respect student’s goals to improve and offer extra help in the mornings. The respect between everyone in the school is evident. Students score extremely well on major tests as a result from feeling comfortable in their environment and from the co-operation between everyone. So far, I have

Respect can be shown in many ways. The most common way is to be a listener. Not just any listener but an active listener. To be an active listener you have to hear what someone is trying to say. Without listening you don’t have understanding. To understand you have to listen without interrupting. You can ask questions later. You also have to have the whole picture and not just one person’s side of the story.…

A great example of treating people with respect is bullying. Bullying happens all the time at all times of the day. People bully people in school, on the internet, and even at home. Sometimes the bully has the motive to hurt people and break someone else down because they are hurting on the inside themselves. The way they express themselves is the wrong way to do it, but it happens. I remember in school, they always said that a bully becomes a bully when they, themselves had been bullied. It is a serious matter these days because people hurt themselves for being bullied. That goes back to my point where I said that it could impact someone life.…

Respect is a very strong fiber of my being. My childhood made me realize that treating people the way you would like to be treated is not just something we heard in school, it should be lived by. Everyone starts off with the same level of respect from me. It does not matter one 's title, sex, race, religion, or sexual preference. If you are a living, breathing, human being I will treat you as I would like to be treated. Everyone starts off with 100% respect and then how much respect I give you in the future depends on your actions. ETHICS IN THE WORKPLACE My upbringing and personal experiences are what shaped my character of who I am today. I cannot compare the inequality I faced to others, but it was enough for me to realize that fair treatment and respect is very important to who I am and my character. When I see others being mistreated I have a deep seated urge to stand beside them and show them they are not alone. It does not matter to me if I am the only one that feels this way; I will stand up for what I believe in. I was the only straight male that joined…
