“What High School Is,” is a chapter from a book called Horace’s Compromise: The Dilemma of American High School, and was written by Theodore R. Sizer in 1984. Mr. Sizer starts the chapter out with a story of a typical boy named mark who is in the eleventh grade. In this story the author describes in detail how Mark spends one of his time blocked days in high school. Mr. Sizer feels it is important to analyze how Mark spends his time because he feels it is a reflection, with some degree of variation, of how most high school students spend their time in school. Mr. Sizer argues, “taking subjects” in a systematized, conveyer-belt way is what is what one does in high school (Sizer). He feels that this process is not related to the rhetorical goals of education; however, it is tolerated by most Americans. In addition, Mr. Sizer argues that there is little demand for synthesis of subjects and that courses are too broad and there is just not enough time to cover all the material.…

In order to be a successful student there are many requirements that a person needs to complete before calling themselves a "student". In the reading, “The achievement of desire” Richard Rodriguez was a student who faced many challenges that made him work hard and earn what he wanted to obtain out of his education. Another important character in the reading “Learning to read” who also wanted to challenge the status quo and prove his community that nothing is impossible was Malcolm X. He fought for the black people 's rights and encouraged others to maintain strong and solid. To be more specific, it takes dedication, intelligence, self-determination and creativity in order for a student to receive better results and advantages.…

Theodore R. Sizer in his essay "What High School Is" begins with an illustration, a detailed account of the opening of the day at a high school, following one student named Mark, sixteen years of age, as he arrives at school, greets his friends, and goes to class. This section is a rather dry recitation of his schedule on this particular day, with some vivid descriptions of the classes, the other students, and the different elements of the school day. This entire section runs four and a half pages and serves as the introduction to the entire essay. This is a daring and not entirely satisfactory approach. There is nothing ahead of this description to assure the reader that the entire essay will not consist of this detailing of one student's day, though in fact the essay has something else in mind if it can hold the attention of the reader until the author gets to it. He might have offered some more traditional introductory remarks to indicate that he has a purpose in telling this lengthy story, which would gain him mileage with many, but instead he just launched into it and continues through to the end of the day.…

It's happens all the time. High School Sweethearts go off to college. Usually, they go off to different colleges and that ends it pretty quickly. But what happens when they actually go to the same college and see each other every day? It may be more difficult to break it off, but as people grow and mature, especially at that age, they tend to go their separate ways. And that's OK. It's almost expected. There are occasions where they stay together and live happily ever after, but that's not the norm. For young couples in this situation, the important thing is not to focus so much on the ever after and enjoy the time spent together today, in the present. Don’t rush into marriage too quickly.…
When you are in college you need to have a plan on what to do each year.…
7th grade grade has so far been a year of hardships, good times, dramma filled boys, and hard to manage amounts of homework. I never realized that seventh grade would be so trying. The social life of a seventh grader is not what I thought at all. It can be very dramatic at times when it doesn't always have to be. For example, my friendships. I have made the best friends in middle school so far and I am overjoyed that the people here are so welcoming and eager to get to know you. Sometimes especially it seventh grade it seems that girl dramma is the big thing. That can sometimes ruin other friendships that you have with people that aren't even involved. Boys in seventh grade are aggravating. They sometimes think that they know everything about…
High school isn’t forever, eventually I plan to go to college. Honestly, any college would be fine, I care more about which masters program I’ll go to. School is very expensive, I want to able to pay for college with a job or with paid internships. After I get my master, I want to get a job in my field. Realistically finding an apartment is very difficult, but I want to live on my own in the city. Learn how to cook home cooked meals from my country. I hope to be able to make it on my own.…
Starting my Junior year back at savanna again I was ready to make a change and be different from my sophomore year. I already knew what class I was going to take and what I was going to do so that I could go to college. In the first couple weeks of my junior year my grades were okay. I had A,B, and C. In my english Class I had a B and that was the first time I had a B in english since I was in junior high. The reason that I had a B in english my junior year was because of my teacher Ms. Stele. She helped me out a lot in my english class. She made the work very easy to understand and always should use examples and and sometimes videos of what we had to do. Then in my history class I had a decent grade because of my teacher Ms. Calles.…

It feels like just yesterday I was in high school, without cares just making my portfolio. Now, it’s been a couple years since college and I’m trying to adjust to married life. It’s been about a year or so since I got hitched. I’m getting ready to have my first child, Winter. I hope to have another in a few years. I currently teach fifth grade in a local elementary school. It’s an okay job, the pay is alright it will get me through my bills, after a few more years I should be getting a raise. I talk to my parents a lot now, they are very important to me. My husband and I are trying to decide how to raise our child. I believe the most important value my parents taught me was to always be polite to people because you never know who is watching. I hope my child grows up learning that. I am very in love with my husband, we met at school and we had an instant connection. Both my grandmother and grandfather have died, it was very tough but time heals all wounds. My husband and I live in a little house but we are looking to relocate to somewhere a little bigger, for the children. We go to the Catholic church every sunday and are very involved in church life. My hope for the future is that I raise my kids to be fabulous people and never give up. The three most important things that have happened since high school would be, graduating college, getting married, and now having my child. What I miss most about the “good old days” is just being able to horse around without having to care about bills and work. When I die, I hope everyone remembers me as a nice person who tried her best to do well.…
High school is an ever-changing process. As I think back to my last three years of High School things like clothes, language, and even hairstyles have transformed. If in three years so much can change imagine, how much things have changed since our parents were in school. From "bell-bottoms" to "baggy jeans", from "groovy" to "slammin", and from the infamous "pompadour" to the now popular "buzz cut". If these things are so different, I wonder how much other things have changed?…
