Continuity of care, for all patients, depends on the medical professionals working together for the betterment human health that frequently rely on each other to completely care for the patient. I don’t believe one could distinguish who or what department is more important in the care of a patient in the hospital setting; from the emergency department entrance door spanning throughout the hospital, every department and every medical professional is focused on one goal: to restore normalcy in the patient and return he/she to the life that he/she was living prior to entering that door. Patient care is conquered by a team of providers contributing to a plan of care for the stabilization, improvement, and health of human…

22). According to McCaffrey et al. (2011) review of literature, collaborative approach is set to create a “positive work environment, decreases costs, improves job satisfaction among nurses, and improves patient care” (p. 294). However, this approach is not without complications. Lancaster, Kolakowsky-Hayner, Kovacich, and Greer-Williams (2015) review of the literature found that various perspectives into the decision-making process and variations of opinions might affect understanding of the clinical situation during the care of the patient. Moreover, Lancaster et al. (2015) found that efficient communication and self-motivated collaboration, improved patient outcomes, while poor communication and collaboration were associated with negative consequences such as medical mistakes (p. 276). Thus, it is essential for everyone involved to possess efficient communication skills. Because nurses are at the forefront providing direct care to the patient, they are responsible for collaborating with other members of the interdisciplinary team to assure all needs are met. Accordingly, it is especially imperative for nurses to develop effective communication…

In our ever changing healthcare system the need for collaboration is more needed than ever. Collaboration as defined on Wikipedia “is a process defined by the recursive interaction of knowledge and mutual learning between two or more people who are working together, in an intellectual endeavor, toward a common goal” (Wikipedia, 2007). Collaboration is a complex process that requires knowledge sharing and joint responsibility for patient care. Sometimes it occurs within long-term relationships between health professionals. On other occasions, collaboration may involve short encounters. In these settings, there is no second chance to collaborate effectively. The challenge then, is to make the most of all interactions in order to use the best knowledge and abilities of all the health team and produce positive patient outcomes.
