High fidelity essay

“High fidelity” is a romantic-comedy book written by the popular author, Nick Hornby. The book has a wide topic, and it can be discussed what some of the main themes in the book are. The book shows Rob as a man who honestly hates everything he does, and isn’t afraid of people thinking that about him. He claims he has a problem with girls, and convinces himself that he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong, maybe to feel better about the situation?

The over all book is about commitment, Rob doesn’t seem to commit to anything, he finds it rather challenging, and that causes him so loose his girlfriend. He always lives with one foot out of the door ready for a new opportunity. Just in case something better might show up.

“I've committed to nothing...and that's just suicide...by tiny, tiny increments.”

Near the ending of the book, Rob realizes what might have caused Laura to leave him, and what might have caused all the other misery he is dealing with. It’s the fact that he hasn’t committed himself to anything. He is getting rather tired of working in the record store, and when Laura presents other careers that he could consider taking, he doesn’t do it, because again that would make him commit to something.

Nick has definitely given the book a funny touch, all though it’s not like the usual comedy-fun. Rob kind of makes fun of himself in an ironic way.

“My friends don't seem to be friends at all but people whose phone numbers I haven't lost.”

Instead of being depressed about not having any real friends, he just phrases it in a good way, and accepts it. That might seem brilliant, not getting hurt that way, but on the other hand he doesn’t do much about it, he just keeps on having the ironic tone, and doesn’t look for new friends. Always having a fun answer is just his attitude, even in a tough situation. When he is really broken he makes more fun of himself, maybe it’s his way of

The first main conflict in The Tiger Rising is Rob verses himself. His mother’s death has had a great impact on his life by forming his “suitcase”. It all started when Rob couldn’t stop crying at his mother’s funeral. His father slapped him and from then on, Rob keeps all of his emotions, thoughts, and wishes locked up inside of him, in his “suitcase”. He soon forms a rash from his “suitcase”. Willie May, Rob’s adult friend, said to him “You are keeping all that sadness down low, in your legs. You not letting it get up to your heart, where it belongs. You got to let that sadness rise on up” (The Tiger Rising p.37). An effective strategy to solve Rob’s problem is to let someone know about his “suitcase”. He should go to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist will be able to cope with Rob’s problems and be able to make it easier to let out his emotions and open his “suitcase”. This will help Rob to become less depressed, more social, and more open to telling others his feelings.…

Andy feels that nobody really understands him and that leads to his unraveling. Andy starts to also feel that nothing he does will matter because of what has happened which only worsens his depression. Even with the dark chapters there are chapters of light throughout the book where things are turning around for Andy. Draper includes dialogues and texts from different characters to ease some of the tension accumulating. I happened to love this book and invite everyone to read it because even if the message seems to be dark and depressing the reality is that everyone will probably go through tough times at one point in life and its how you turn out that matters most to everyone…

Laura has certain qualities that also apply to the song. She is a shy shut-in that never quite realizes the real world. She is always, "Treading water full of worry." Afraid of disappointing her mother. She drops out of her college courses and has a low self-esteem. This self loathing to an extent can even be more destructive than physical damages. She will not have the strength or confidence in herself to live a real life. All she can do is, "keep searching" for the answer, yet the "search goes on" if she can never realize her potential. She is so fragile, wasting away her days taking care of her glass menagerie. Towards the end of the play, we have reason to believe that she does overcome some of her shyness though. What with her using nicknames with Jim and her lack of being upset when a favorite glass ornament breaks. Wanting to fully understand the meaning behind existence in general. Why do we have routines that we make to be followed and lived by, family members, friends, or certain things that happen throughout everyday life. In the book he seems as if he does not want to or in a way avoids settling down with someone because that would mean he will have to sort of give up on not wanting to have a routine and a set way of life. Because eventually with time they will have to come up with some sort of day to day plan between work, family, time together, and time to just be alone. As far as he shows he does not want that at that very moment, if he ever does. He questions everything way too much in order to be at that place in his life, to be in a committed relationship. This is about the time when he becomes interested into movies and wants his life to be like them in ways. Then one day he went home and met his great aunt Emily for lunch and they began to talk about the importance of their loved ones. The conversation about their loved ones ended up changing and she begins talking to him about how she really wants him to go to medical school. But again, just like the relationship scenario, at this point in time in his life he is too worried about trying to understand what is the meaning of life and being stress free, to be focused on going to medical…

At first its believed that Robert could be a homosexual by the way he described captain Taffler at the prairie. He described Taffler by “his mouth his eyes and his nipples looked as if someone had been sculpting him and had left their thumbprints behind”. Insinuating Robert had a little crush on Taffler but he was just someone who Robert perceived to be a role model. Roberts reaction to what he saw at the whore house made him very angry and act out in violence, foreshadowing violence to come. At first Robert doesn’t want to accept what he is seeing and is angry that someone he looked up to could do such a thing. Robert knowing the strict laws about homosexuality had developed a homophobia leading him to cease any thoughts regarding Taffler as a role mode. This book took place in a time where homosexuals were not allowed to join the army or even exist as it was an act of crime to be gay and Taffler was a national hero and was supposed to endorse moral characteristics. Robert is also scared that this might also happen to him, as the whore house is representing how much someone can be affected by war and how what they experience can change them completely. Aboard the SS Masanabie Roberts makes a friend named Harris, who like robert has a beautiful sole and cares for animals deeply. Seeing as Robert never…

The humor is quite crude and is directly attacking another person in this instance and does so a lot more through out the show. Chris Lilly uses a lot of caricature with his characters taking them to the extreme but what makes it funny is that there are people like that, that other people may have dealt with in the past this adds a sense of understanding in the show and it also means that the characters aren’t completely unbelievable.…

Richard appears to evolve from his initial condition throughout the story following the constructive reactions from his community, and close to the end, the introduction of Shawna, reaching an ostensible stability. Therefore, the main character is dynamic, he suffers a complete shift in his behavior that is clearly portrayed in the way he narrates his experiences with his friends and Shawna. Richard illustrates himself in different circumstances that give the reader different sides to his current life. He is an addict; however, he does not fulfill all the stereotypes of one, he is also browbeaten, which seems to be normal in his current life because of the way he expresses the event in which he is being robbed. Nevertheless, the reader sees him as a friend and a lover once the melioration begins. Because of this, his development as a character is round, he is battling in some of his sides as narrated during the introduction, though, he starts to find relief in some of his others. The beneficial development on Richard as the story moves forward supports the story’s…
