We may think a lot have been discovered about the ancient writings of the Egyptians when really there is still an abundance to be found. Hieroglyphs were a regular writing system used by ancient Egyptians to depict stories as well as placing documentation. Hieroglyphs are immensely hard to understand to us, and just as hard for most Egyptians. Only royalty, priests, scribes, and government officials could comprehend hieroglyphics. The greatest discovery making our understanding towards hieroglyphics is the Rosetta Stone.
The Rosetta Stone is a stone with two types of writing on it: Egyptian and Greek. Comparing these two languages gave a better understanding of the hieroglyphic alphabet. The Rosetta Stone was carved in 196 B.C. and found in 1799 by French soldiers who were rebuilding a fort in Egypt. The stone talks about why we should honor a pharaoh and listing all

Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are all based on pictures. Other hieroglyphic styles developed simultaneously with an easier and quicker alternative to write information. As you can imagine, writing in pictures, especially in color, would be a very time consuming way of writing. Therefore, in hieroglyphic writings, it was common to leave out vowels.
