Hex Hall Character Analysis
For my journal, I will discuss the characters, their setting, and what I believe will happen based on these things in the book Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.
Our main character Sophie is a “huge dork”(pg 40) of a sixteen year old “plain” (pg 34) girl, who has “brown hair, freckles, and the whole girl-next-door vibe going on” (pg 22). She is a “witch” (pg 11) who is “really bad at girl stuff” (pg 39). She was raised by her mom, “Grace Mercer” (pg 22), who is a “human” (pg 84), “Religious Studies teacher” (pg 23). Sophie’s “roommate” (pg 29) “Jennifer Talbot” (pg 29) or “Jenna” (pg 29) is a “tiny girl, barely five feet tall” (pg 28) with ”skin that was nearly snow, as was her hair, with the exception of a hot-pink stripe running through her bangs.”

Adrienne represents "a monster in the shape of a girl," (MacLeod, P.40) by physically demonstrating a selfish, emotionless and unexplainable hate towards Sophie. Adrienne leads her friend Braidie, who contributes on a more subtle level to this motif of monstrous behaviour. Adrienne shows her sinister leadership by constantly instigating a form of abuse towards Sophie. "Adrienne leans into Sofie so that Sofie is squished," (P.42) causing apparent physical harm. Mentally, Adrienne's inhuman natural instinct is to be as cruel as possible to Sophie. Adrienne replacing her identity by a two letter word that is used to represent a thing; "what is IT doing? ," (P.45) showing extreme humiliation in the form of verbal abuse. Sophie the vulnerable target she is, allows Adrienne to prey upon her like some sort of emotionless monster. Braidie is different, she shows her emotions by expressing feeling in her thoughts. Braidie best represented by "a girl in the shape of a monster," (P.40) is continuously a witness to the bashing of this innocent, yet somehow different girl. She is present in the harmful activity and finds herself thinking "Maybe she also likes trying to write poems and stories," (P.45) showing human qualities of emotion towards Sophie. Adrienne doesn't show any sympathy towards Sophie, which highlights the concern Braidie feels. Braidie realizing, "Sophie and I might have one thing in common" (P.45) keeps it to herself, in fear of jeopardizing this relationship with her so called best friend. Braidie, knowing "Adrienne is going to do something," (P.45) continues imagining horrible consequences: "Sofie is falling, cannonballing over the side of the bridge" (P.42). Adrienne enjoys inflicting torment, truly: "a monster in the shape of a girl (P.40)." A posed to Braidie who shows her monster side, in the form of a silent and powerless bystander.…

Julianna "Juli" Baker meets Bryce Loski two days before the beginning of second grade; it's something about those blue eyes that attract her. Juli knows it's love, while Bryce, like any seven-year-old boy, doesn't. Juli stalks Bryce all through his childhood; staring at his house, asking him to play, following him at school, etc. Every day, Bryce watches Juli climb the sycamore tree at the bus stop, which Juli is very attached to. Ever since Juli retrieved a kite at the uppermost branches, she has loved the view. She constantly asks Bryce to come join her in the tree, as well as yelling out how many blocks away the bus is. Bryce, being unbelievably shy and annoyed by all the attention, asks out Juli's nemesis, Shelly Stalls, to get rid of his admirer. Bryce looks over his shoulder for Juli every time he's with Shelly, which of course causes Juli to think he's being forced to date her. This provokes a catfight between Juli and Shelly over Bryce. The two break up, and Bryce is back to square one. There comes an incident in sixth grade when, much to Bryce's chagrin and irritation, Juli constantly sniffs Bryce's hair in spelling from her assigned position behind him. According to Juli, his hair smells like watermelon and he has blond earlobe fuzz, even though he has really dark hair. Bryce is disgruntled from this seat change, because Juli had initially sat next to him where she whispered him answers. Now that she's behind him, he's lost that advantage, and his grades slip, especially in spelling. This halts, however, when as Juli sniffs him, she begins to whisper answers in his ear. Bryce, torn between feeling grateful and awkwardly guilty for hating her so much when she's helping him, follows the answers anyway until the end of the year.…

“Regan is an example of a sister that goes above and beyond the expectations of any sister. Regan has unconditional love for her brother Liam, and she is able to convey that as a child. Most of the time, though, these siblings have a mutually supportive relationship, even if Regan is uneasy when she thinks about Liam "transitioning," becoming a woman on the outside as well as on the inside. This positive relationship is essential to Liam, who is sometimes teased at school and often bullied at home by their macho father, who embraces traditional gender roles and constantly pressures Liam to be more masculine” (Piehl). Regan’s her sisters’ keepers who hides her own pain to take on…

Similarly, over the course of the story, 8-year old Sophie develops a great friendship with the BFG. She uses her resourcefulness to appear at the Queens windowsill to beg for help. Her welfare for others is evident in her explanations to the Queen about the actions of the evil child-eating giants. She is child-like because she is a child, and her kindness is demonstrated in her interactions with the BFG and others throughout the story. The final character trait shared by both the BFG and Sophie is their sense of justice. Both of these characters are glad to the see the evil giants get the punishment they deserve—living in a pit from which they cannot escape and eating snozzcumbers until the day they die. As such, there are other secondary and minor characters that play a supporting role in the story, including the Queen of England, the military, and the evil giants.…

Sophie Amundsen - Sophie is the protagonist of Sophie's World. She is an inquisitive and spirited fourteen year old who learns just before turning fifteen that her life is the invention of Albert Knag. Sophie learns this and many other things from Alberto Knox, the philosopher who Albert Knag invented as her teacher. Sophie does not just learn from Alberto; she also questions him and shows that she has ideas of her own to implement. By the end of the story Sophie shows that she is a philosopher, because she has the ability to look at things from a different perspective and she can act on what she thinks. Sophie is friendly but not all that social. She is more given to introspection than chatting. In fact, Sophie almost forgets about her one good friend, Joanna, when she starts learning about philosophy. Sophie is critical, and she does not spare those she cares about. Her mother has to listen to much criticism from Sophie throughout the book, and Joanna and Alberto also hear a fair share. Sophie is opinionated and she is interested in saying only what she thinks.…

In this novel there was a collision with the way school was suppose to be run, there was confusion. “I do not want a pack of children teaching me how to read. The young should learn from the old. Sophie's World

    • 2545 Words

The first chapter of the book was entitled “The Garden of Eden” the story was well written, I was able to imagine the environment and I was able to see how Sophie would react on those given situations. The first questions that Sophie receives make her think about who she is and where the world came from. These questions are easy to ask and almost impossible to answer, but what is most amazing of all is that people stop asking them. Sophie realizes that she has never really thought about these things before, and when she does she understands that nothing could be more important. It seems that knowing who we really are is necessary for our lives to have meaning and import. Sophie thinks about the fact that the world is part of the universe and that must come from somewhere. Sophie did not accept that something must have come from nothing. Sophie also thinks that even if God created the universe, he himself must have come from somewhere. As a reader I also feel the same as Sophie’s reaction and also ask myself “who am I’’ and “where the world came from’’. As little children we are tremendously inquisitive, and we wonder about everything, but as life goes on we begin to take certain things for granted even though we do not understand them.…
