Hester Prynne Character

Nathaniel’s Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, tells the story of one of the most independent and confident women in American literature. Of the four main characters, Hester Prynne, was my favorite. Hester maintained her humility, independence, courage, and dignity throughout her scandalous life, while remaining charitable to her community. She did not receive any help from the community, everything accomplished was done alone. Her personality traits are worthy of examination. Hester’s humility and courageousness is seen many times throughout the story. She never married or pursued another relationship. She placed her main focus on taking good care of her child. She faced the townspeople on the scaffold, as if it did not concern her in anyway. She carried her baby without any shame. The child, a product of her sin of adultery, stirs mixed feelings in Hester. She blushes, but maintains a glance that would not be abashed. She walked around town, not bothering anyone, doing her duties in a quiet manner. Remaining humble and courageous, independence also was not a big challenge for Hester. She made her living by sewing everything possible, except wedding gowns. She did not tell on Reverend Dimmesdale and she did not reveal Chillingworth’s secret without his permission. She admitted to being guilty of sin and chose to wear the scarlet letter proudly. She does what she feels is right by wearing the scarlet letter for as long as needed to prove that she is in control. She is dignified in the way she carries herself and dresses Pearl, because their clothing is different from the other people of the town. She returned to the cottage on the outskirts of the village, because even after being shunned for so many years, she knew she was a valuable asset to her
