Subject: Company Tour of the Hershey Company

The Hershey Company is known as the Hershey Foods Corporation until 2005. It's headquarter is in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company, which is over an hundred years old!. It is now the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America. Hershey's corporate statement today is to "Bringing sweet moments of Hershey happiness to the world every day." It aims to investigate and promote chemistry and health benefits of cocoa. Hershey's strategies are: strong product differentiation, technological advancement, and frequent acquisitions in the emerging countries. It aim to grow five key brands: Hershey Bar, Reese's, Hershey Kisses, Jolly Rancher and Ice Breakers. By focusing on a small amount of brands, Hershey was able to develop high quality products and distinct tastes that differentiated itself from other competitors and gained competitive advantage. Hershey, Pennsylvania has endless supply of clean water and large area of pastures full of dairy cows. The daily supply of fresh milk is very essential to the operation chain of making chocolate. Another vital ingredient of making chocolate is the cocoa bean. This main ingredient of Hershey's chocolate comes from other countries, such as Africa, South America, and tropical regions near the equator where the cocoa beans are harvested. The cocoa beans arrive all year round. They are unloaded by hand, then transported to store sites until needed. The cocoa beans travel to the screening and cleaning machines which remove unwanted part of the cocoa beans. After the beans are cleaned, they are sorted by the country origin. Cocoa beans have different flavors depends on which part of the world they are from. The cocoa beans from different locations are blended together in a precise portion to form the distinct Hershey taste. The

    By 1867, Hershey’s father “had largely cut himself out of the family picture” (Milton). Following an incomplete rural school education, he was apprenticed at the age of fifteen but was fired shortly after. Four years later, Hershey borrowed one hundred and fifty dollars from a gracious aunt to set up his own shop in the heart of Philadelphia. For five long years Hershey put everything he had into the business. But success eluded him, he finally closed shop and headed west to reunite with his father. But when Hershey got an up-close look at the art of chocolate making he was immediately hooked. “The fascination quickly became focused on milk chocolate, considered a delicacy” (Milton), but was largely dominated by the Swiss.
