Heros Journey

When I was a little girl, I always loved to play pretend. My childhood days were spent being princesses and mermaids, doctors and firemen, and even the occasional dragon. Although I really, really loved being a beautiful fairy queen, I often decided to become something quite different--an explorer. This was where I was at my peak. Yards turned into jungles, and my dog became a very rare tiger, just waiting to be documented and put into my discovery journal. Exploring was my absolute favorite thing to do. However, as I grew older, I gradually stopped exploring. The backyard was simply that--a backyard; my discovery journal was thrown deep in a box and left alone for years. My inner explorer became abandoned on a desert island, in a place where it couldn’t reach me anymore. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence among many children. The passion of exploring and adventure seems to disappear with age, and often times, that passion doesn’t come back. As tragic as this is, it is equally ironic. If we teach the next generation of leaders how to discover new and amazing concepts, imagine the change that will overcome our cultures and our lives. Taking one small step into this direction can begin to transform the way that we see both our world and each other. Exploration is the key to creating a new and improved world. A lamentable misconception about exploration is that there is nothing new to actually explore. This assumption couldn’t be more wrong. To date, ninety-five percent of the ocean remains unexplored1.
