Heroic Action: Louie Zamperini By Martin Jacobs
Heroic action involves being engaged in an activity voluntarily, taking risks, and conducting in service to one or more people. However, in the article, ¨Lucky Louie Zamperini” by Martin Jacobs, most of the activity by Louie did not display him as a hero based on the mentioned definition of heroic action. The basis behind this is due to the instances of escaping death, rather than saving one’s life. Nevertheless, the article does signify heroism towards Louie after informing the reader about Zamperini’s involvement in inspiring people. An example of this is in quote, “Today, Zamperini travels the world as an inspirational speaker.” By Louie doing this deed for people, he is being involved in serving a community; therefore, Louie is a hero.

What is heroism? Heroism is typically described with qualities such as courage, bravery, fortitude, unselfishness, or someone who has achieved some fantastic goal or status, or even someone who has accomplished a great task. Heroism consists of always striving to do what is right, rather than what is pleasant, or convenient, or what everyone else is doing. In the stories "Candide" and "The Love Suicides at Amijima," it is proved that almost anyone can be a hero. This is established when people of the so called "middle class" emerge as heroes.…

I believe a hero is someone who truly intends to make the world a better place for all people. He stands for what he believes in even though he may encounter danger and obstacle. These actions of heroism don't just occur in literature. Many people have shown acts of heroism. For example Robin Emmons, a woman who had the desire to help bring healthy foods to low income communities, to improve the health of the people in those areas. After experiencing her brother grow borderline diabetic, due to a lack of accessible healthy foods in his transitional homing, she became inspired to help others in need (Geil 1). What she did next was unthinkably selfless; she quit her job and dug up one-fourth of her backyard. She started growing healthy, easily accessible food for people in need. Eventually, she started a non profit organization that delivers healthy foods to people in need, called “Sow much Grod” (Geil 2). Her organization…

Throughout history, there have been an incalculable number of heroes; that can be through reality or fictitious. From viewing the clips from this assignments and reading various articles regarding heroism, there are multiple aspects that determine exactly what a hero should be. In regards to the Spiderman video, Aunt May explains that a hero is someone that is courageous, self-sacrificing, and sets examples for others. Likewise, an article I read describes a hero as someone who is courageous, selfless, humble, patient, and caring. In my opinion, a hero is an individual who cares more about the life of others than themselves; they would do anything in their power to protect others as well as the world around them.…

The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Heroes aren't people with super natural abilities that make them greater and stronger than ordinary people. Heroes are people who make an effort to change the world no matter what it takes. This is clearly shown by Lieutenant Dunbar in the novel "Dances with Wolves,” written by Michael Blake. Dunbar shows traits of heroism by being loyal to his word when he does not leave his post, even when there was no sign of help; showing bravery by saving Stands With a Fist when he could have left her to die; and completing his own personal, emotional quest. Lieutenant Dunbar may seem like a normal person, but he acquires the traits to be a real hero…
